Utica goes 2-1 in volleyball to get back to .500

Utica (9-9, 4-7) went 2-1 last week with the Redskins getting swept by Johnstown-Monroe (13-3, 9-2), and then responding a 3-1 win over Lakewood (4-13, 1-10, and a sweep win over Granville Christian Academy (0-13, 0-10).

Utica has had an up-and-down season and on September 26 Johnstown-Monroe took advantage of the downs, as the Redskins fell 3-0 in a sweep.

The Johnnies won handily in set won by a score of 25-15, and then followed with a 25-21 set two victory. Set three was a see-saw battle where Utica showed plenty of fight, but ended up falling 29-27.

Utica was led by Hannah Shaver, with the senior tallying five kills and one block. Emilee Ellis had four assists and Alexa Gosnell recorded four assists of her own. Ellis added six digs. Lexi Wiegand had eight digs and one ace.

Utica went on to win 3-1 over Lakewood (4-13, 1-10) with Shaver leading the charge with 13 kills.

The Redskins lost set one 25-21 and then battled in a see-saw match to win 31-29. Set three three was tight again, with Utica coming out on top 25-23. They finished strong with a 25-13 dominant set four to seal the match.

Wiegand was outstanding from the serving line with seven assists, and also led the match with 24 digs. Gosnell had 20 digs while Ellis and Emma Kimpel had 13 and 16 digs respectively. Gosnell and Ellis split the setting with 17 and 15 assists each. Ellis added seven kills.

On Sept. 26 Utica beat Lakewood in four sets. The Redskins fell 25-21 in the first set, but then won the next three by scores of 31-29, 25-23 and 25-13. Shaver led the way with 13 kills. Wiegand and Gosnell had good defensive nights with 24 and 20 digs each. Emma Kimpel added 16 digs. Gosnell and Ellis recorded 17 and 15 assists respectively in the setting role.

Utica beat Granville Christian on Sept. 30 in three sets by lopsided scores of 25-7, 25-6 and 25-8. Shaver and Leigha Burnett had six kills to lead the offense. Kristen Ryan and Ellis were incredible from the serving line with 10 and nine aces respectively in the win. Ellis tallied 12 assists.
