Blankenhorn wins at Maumee Bay Classic

Mount Vernon’s Brock Blankenhorn took first place in the 106-lb. weight class as Mount Vernon finished in eighth place among 57 teams at the 2023 Maumee Bay Classic wrestling invitational on Jan. 14. Wadsworth won the event with 262.5 points to edge Perrysburg with 256.0. Buckeye won bronze with 182.5 and Mount Vernon earned 103.5 to finish in eighth.

Blankenhorn won gold at 106 lbs., pinning Perrysburg’s Ayden Dodd in 3:05. Yellow Jacket wrestler Alex Taylor won silver at 215 lbs., losing in the final to Springsboro’s Myles Johnson by a 5-2 decision.

Mount Vernon’s next dual meet was a Jan. 18 win over OCC-rival Ashland, 45-36.

 

Herbst wins at 285 lbs. in Wasserbeck Classic

Lucas Herbst won the 285-lb. championship, Trent Rooke took silver at 113 lbs., and Mason Hoeflich placed second at 190 lbs., leading Fredericktown to a ninth-place finish among 13 scoring teams at the North Union Don Wasserbeck Classic at North Union High School on Jan. 21. Elgin took the top spot with 264.5 points, well ahead of second-place Olentangy Orange with 177.0; Fredericktown’s wrestlers earned 102.0 points. Top placers for the Freddies included sophomore Rooke, second at 113; Dalton Lang, sixth at 132; Hoeflich, second at 190; and Herbst, first at 285 lbs.

Smith wins at 150, Utica second at Drumm Classic

Clayton Smith claimed the 150-lb. title, Breyden Hill was second at 126, and Andrew Lewis finished second at 175 as Utica High School placed second among 19 teams at the Robin Drumm Classic at Heath High School on Jan. 21. John Glenn took top honors with 202.5 points and Utica earned 189.0 for silver. Top finishers for the Redskins included Anthony Unger, fourth at 106; Wyatt Bennett, sixth at 113; Hill, second at 126; Nick Drumm, fourth at 138; Robert Cotsamire, third at 144; Smith, first at 150; Zach Cyphers, fourth at 165; Lewis, second at 175; and Brandon Thornsberry, third at 215.

Freddie Girls place 16th at Lady Brave Invite

The Lady Brave Invitational at Whetstone High School saw 26 competing schools and Fredericktown’s girls wrestling team earned 17th place, picking up 22.0 points. Lebanon ran way with the event with 268.0 points – 146 points ahead of second-place Fairfield’s 122.0. Cammie McKinley had the Freddies’ top finish at fourth place in the 135-lb. weight class. Dori McCoy was fifth at 190.

Morrison wins gold, Bolton takes silver at Ridgedale

Highland’s Lady Scot wrestlers Madalynn Morrison and Emma Bolton earned podium spots as Highland finished in sixth place among 25 teams at the Ridgedale Girls Wrestling Invitational on Jan. 21. Morrison took the 235-lb. weight class championship and Bolton was second at 190 to earn the bulk of Highland’s 76.5 points. Minerva won the team title with 113.0, just ahead of second-place Mentor’s 109. Top Highland finishers included Brianna Tuggle, fourth at 130; Caitlyn Thieret, third at 155; Bolton, second at 190; and Morrison won at 235.
