Saturday, September 9: Centerburg varsity volleyball tri meet, 10 a.m.; East Knox varsity volleyball at Ashland, 9 a.m.; Highland varsity volleyball at Adena, Westerville Central and Dublin Jerome, beginning at 10 a.m.;

In cross-country competition last week, Fredericktown, Highland, Loudonville and East Knox placed well, and Loudonville’s Tess Schultz finished second in the girls race at Ashland.

This week’s Mount Vernon News ATHLETES of the WEEK are Larsen Terrill (Highland volleyball) and Dane Nauman (Highland football).

Centerburg, Mount Vernon, Loudonville and Northmor won mid-week volleyball matches, and Fredericktown had their seven-game win streak snapped.

Seven sweeps were recorded in local vollayball matches

Football winners last week put lots of points on the board as local high school football action heated up in the KMAC, OCC, MOAC and LVL.

High School Football -- Aug. 25: Ashland 14, Marion Harding 6; Caledonia River Valley 42, Mansfield 0,;Columbus Academy 33, Cardington-Lincoln 8; Crestview 20, East Knox 14; Danville 67, Bucyrus 6; Fredericktown 19, Northridge 17; Highland 26, TriWay 7; Newark 35, Mount Vernon 28; Northmor 60, South Central 0.

Mount Vernon took a pair of matches and sweeps were frequent in local volleyball action.

The Mount Vernon News sports department is in its third year of the MVN ATHLETE of the WEEK, a school-year weekly feature that spotlights local student-athletes and their schools.This week’s ATHLETES of the WEEK are Kameron Stover (Highland volleyball) and Jonnie Askew (Mount Vernon football).

Volleyball dominance was the order of the court as 14 matches ended in shutouts.

Saturday, August 26: Cardington-Lincoln varsity volleyball at. Pirate Invite, 9 a.m.; Centerburg varsity volleyball at Fairbanks, 12 p.m.; Danville varsity volleyball vs. West Holmes, 12 p.m.; Fredericktown varsity volleyball at Bishop Ready, 11 a.m.; Highland varsity volleyball vs. Jonathan Alder, 12 p.m.

Mount Vernon (1-0, 0-0) started off its season against Grove City (0-1, 0-0) with a 3-1 victory on Saturday, led by senior setter Tori Burdette, who led the team with 26 assists in the opening match on Saturday.

Caylen LeMaster rushed for 189 yards and was in on eight tackles in leading Centurburg over Utica, 34-6.

Saturday, August 12: Cardington-Lincoln varsity volleyball at Delaware Hayes and 8 others, 9 a.m.; Mount Vernon boys varsity golf vs. Big Walnut, 8:30 a.m.; Mount Vernon Nazarene University college volleyball vs. Ohio Christian, 10 a.m.; Mount Vernon Nazarene University college volleyball vs. University of Northwestern Ohio, 12:50 p.m.

Eleven student-athletes won the the ATHLETE of the WEEK honor more than once, two won it three times and one competitor took home the honor five times. The finalists: Dane Nauman (Highland), Grant Bentley (Northmor) and Nathan Streby (East Knox). And the MVN Male ATHLETE of the YEAR is Dane Nauman.

Central Ohio communities saw stellar play this season from its high school baseball student-athletes. Local teams had four athletes named to All-Ohio first teams.

For this year, there were many deserving student-athletes, but we cut the list down to three female finalists, and have selected one overall winner as the Mount Vernon News FEMALE ATHLETE of the YEAR. There is a definite lean toward the track this year. The finalists are: Juliette Laracuente-Huebner, Madilyn Elson and Elsa Hoam.
