High School Volleyball recaps: 14 Shutout matches showcase high-stakes action

Volleyball dominance was the order of the court as 14 matches ended in shutouts.

Fredericktown 3, East Knox 0

East Knox (0-2, 0-1) hosted KMAC leading Fredericktown (5-0, 1-0) in conference volleyball action on August 24, and the Freddies made quick work of the Bulldogs in a 3-0 sweep led by setter Julia Partington who racked up 25 assists.

The Freddies took the first set by a score of 25-19 and then dominated set two 25-15. Fredericktown finished off the match with a 25-18 win.

Partington had 25 assists, one kill, four aces, one block and four digs. Jillian Bouton was the team leader in kills with nine, and also had two digs and four aces. Ella Bouton had eight kills, four digs and two blocks. Cally Carpenter posted six kill and six digs, while Bella Mullins had a good defensive night with 12 digs.

Centerburg 3, Danville 0

Fairbanks 3, Centerburg 0

Centerburg (3-0, 2-0) hosted Danville (2-1, 1-1) on August 24, and the Trojans made it look easy against their KMAC foe in a dominant 3-0 sweep, but the team was then on the other end of a sweep, in a 3-0 loss to Fairbanks (5-0, 2-0 the following match on August 26.

The Trojans crushed the Blue Devils in the first set with a 25-6 win and never let up, going for 25-13 and 25-10 to take the final two sets and the match.

Riley Skillman posted seven digs to lead the offense. Julia Orndorf had six kills and two digs. Stella Weisbrod had five kills and 12 digs. Katelyn Johnson had nine digs. Clara Johnson and Kennedi Glenn split the setting with 11 and 10 assists respectively.

Danville had only eight kills in the match and were led by Mykenzie Neitzelt with four. She also had an ace, three blocks, three assists and four digs. Zoey Neitzelt had two kills, two digs, three assists and four blocks.

In the match against Fairbanks, Centerburg sputtered out of the gate with a 25-15 loss in the opening set. The Panthers cruised the rest of the way with 25-19 and 25-22 wins.

Seneca East 3, Northmor 0

Northmor 2, Lucas 1

Northmor 2, Clear Fork 0

Northmor (2-2, 0-1) went 2-1 last week, starting with a sweep loss to Seneca East (2-2, 0-0) on August 24 and a 2-1 win over Lucas (2-2, 0-0) on August 26, with setter Lizzie Erlsten feeding Maggie Brewer six times in the win over Lucas.

In the loss to Seneca East, Layla Castle had six kills to lead the Golden Knights, while Brewer added four. Kallie Wright had five aces in a great match at the serving line, and also had eight digs.. Allison Sheriff had 14 digs and Lizzie Erlsten added nine digs to go with her 18 assists.

Against Lucas, Brewer led with six kills, one ace and six digs to help secure the win. Jillian Zeger was solid on defense with 11 digs. Erlsten, Allison Sheriff and Kallie Wright had nine digs each. Erlsten added 15 assists in the match.

Northmor then won its second straight match against Clear Fork by scores of 25-16 and 25-12. Brewer led the team in kills again with six. She also had an ace and 10 digs. Erlsten put up 16 assists, six digs and a pair of kills.

Heath 3, Utica 0

Utica 2, Northridge 1

Utica 2, West Muskingum 0

Utica (4-3, 2-1) went 2-1 last week, starting with a 3-0 loss to Heath (2-2, 1-0) on August 24 and then a 2-1 win over Northridge on August 26 (2-3, 1-2) where the team had a balanced offensive attack with 30 kills. They then beat West Muskingum (0-6, 0-2) 2-0 on August 27.

In the win against Northridge, Alexa Gosnell and Emilee Ellis split the setting duties with 12 assist and 10 assists each. They also were the leaders in kills with seven apiece, and Ellis added two aces and 12 digs. Lexi Wiegand had 13 digs to lead the defense.

The loss to Utica was much closer than a sweep would indicate, as the Redskins fell 27-25 in the opening set, 25-22 in set two and 25-17 in the third set. 

Hannah Shaver had six kills and Gosnell had four kills. Weigand put up 14 digs and Gosnell had nine digs. Gosnell and Ellis had nine and seven assists respectively. 

Utica also participated in the Tornado Invite over the weekend and beat West Muskingum 2-0 with Ellis leading the offense with five kills. The Redskins won by scores of 25-22 and 25-19.

Wiegand had eight digs, while Ellis and Callie Baker each had seven digs. Gosnell was the top setter in the match with 10 assists, with Ellis adding four and Baker assisting once.

Mount Vernon 3, Ashland 0

Pickerington Central 3, Mount Vernon 0

Mount Vernon (4-1, 2-0) won its fourth straight game to start the season with a sweep over Ashland (3-1, 1-1) on August 24, but the Yellow Jackets couldn’t keep the streak going as they were swept by Pickerington Central (1-1, 0-0) to split the week.

Mount Vernon crushed Ashland out of the gate with a 25-13 win, followed by victories of 25-20 in both following two sets. Kaitlyn Thompson had nine kills to lead the offense for the Yellow Jackets. She also had a block and a dig. Tori Burdette had 16 assists and eight digs in the win. Audrey Stuller had 12 digs.

The Yellow Jackets lost to the Pickerington Central Tigers by scores of 25-14 in the first two sets, and ended with a 25-19 loss.

West Holmes 3, Danville 0

Danville (2-2, 1-1) had trouble keeping up with West Holmes (1-3, 0-2) on August 26, suffering a sweep loss to the Knights in a match that was never close.

Danville lost 25-10, 25-20 and 25-19 in the match against West Holmes. Seniors Mykenzie Neitzelt and Hope Moore each tallied five kills, with Neitzelt adding seven assists, nine digs, an ace and a block. Delaney Alvis had 10 digs to lead the defense. Zoey Neitzelt had six digs in the match.

Cardington-Lincoln 2, Eastmoor Academy 0

Cardington-Lincoln 2, Worthington Christian 1

Revere 2, Cardington-Lincoln 0

Lily Clark of Cardington-Lincoln (2-3, 0-1) put on a show at the Pirate Invite that the team hosted Saturday, with the senior putting up 35 kills over the course of a pair of wins to go with a loss. 

Cardington -Lincoln beat Eastmoor Academy (0-1, 0-0) 2-0 and Worthington Christian (1-2, 0-0) 2-1, while losing to Revere (7-0, 0-0) 2-0.

Clark was the top player against Eastmoor Academy with 13 kills and 13 digs, in a match where the Pirates won 25-20 in both sets. Fellow senior Autumn Holt added seven kills and senior setter Abby Ufferman had 24 assists. 

Clark was again the leader in kills with 13 to go with five aces against Worthington Christian, with a 26-24 loss in set one, followed by set wins of 25-20 and 15-7. Ufferman had 23 assists and defensively Rylee Donkin and Lundyn Belvins were on top of their game with 15 and 13 digs respectively.

Revere was a force to be reckoned with as they have been all season against the Pirates, with the Minutemen convincingly beating them 25-11 and 25-6. Clark had nine of the team’s kills, and added four digs. Ufferman had nine assists for the Pirates.

Smithville 3, Loudonville 0

Loudonville 3, Mount Gilead 0

The Loudonville Redbirds (2-2, 0-0) got back to the .500 mark last week, starting with a loss to Smithville (4-0, 0-0) 3-0 and then a sweep win of their own over Mount Gilead (0-3, 0-1).

Maya Heffelfinger had a great match despite the sweep loss against the Smithies on August 24, putting up 14 kills and three digs. Mikala Humphrey had 15 digs and Olyvia Fenton added 12 digs. Payton VanSickle had 21 assists and nine digs.

The Redbirds followed up with a win against the Mount Gilead Indians on August 26, with dominant set scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-14.
