Seven sweeps were recorded in local vollayball matches
Highland 3, Shelby 0
Highland 3, Loudonville 0
Kameron Stover and Larsen Terrill were a two-headed monster for Highland (5-1, 3-0) against Shelby (3-4, 1-2) on August 31, with Terrill feeding Stover all night for kills in a sweep win in a conference matchup at home.
Highland beat Shelby 25-17, but it was tight throughout as the teams were tied at 14-14. The Whippets scored a pair of unanswered points to go up by two, which forced Highland to take a timeout. The tactic worked, and the Lady Scots went off for an 11-1 run to take the set. Stover had eight kills and Terrill recorded six kills.
In the second set the Scots were down 8-2, but once again a timeout served as a moment for the team to regroup and go 23-11 the rest of the way for the win. Stover put up seven kills in the set. The Lady Scots combined for three other kills, three aces and a pair of blocks in a 25-19 win.
Highland followed with a 25-18 win in a third set where the Lady Scots led big early and never looked back. Highland had 6-0 start to the set and forced Shelby to take a timeout at 16-8, before finishing off the Whippets to clinch the match. The Lady Scots had five players contributing to 14 kills, while the team also had three aces between three players.
Stover posted a match high 20 kills, four aces and 21 digs. Terrill had 27 assists, 10 kills and 12 digs. Camryn Miller delivered defensively with a match high 27 digs to go with seven assists. Kendal Kline had nine digs for the Lady Scots.
Highland then went on to face Loudonville (3-3, 1-0) on September 2 and beat the Redbirds in three sets.
The Lady Scots beat Loudonville 25-21 in a close set one, and then took an easy set two victory, 25-12, and won the final set 25-18.
In set one, the Lady Scots trailed 2-5 but they went on a 7-1 tear to take a 9-6 lead. They had a 20-11 lead at one point and while the Redbirds made a push, Highland held on for the four point win.
In set two Terrill scored five times in six points, with three kills and two aces. Stover scored 11 points in an 11 point sequence, which included six kills and two aces.
The third set was back-and-forth with several ties, but MaKayleeMerckling had a pair of aces to give the Lady Scots an 11-6 lead. Stover had seven kills and Reagan Maibach added five kills to lead the way in a 20-12 set three win.
Highland was led by Terrill with 35 assists, 11 kills and three aces. Stover had 23 kills and four aces. Maibach put up seven kills and Merckling had five aces.
Maya Heffelfinger was the kills leader for Loudonville with nine, to go with three digs. Payton VanSickle put up 17 assists and 14 digs. Olyvia Fenton led Loudonville with 15 digs.
Fredericktown 3, Danville 0
Julia Partington continued a strong senior season setting up kills for Fredericktown (7-0, 3-0) on August 31, leading the Freddies to their seventh straight win to start the season over Danville (2-4, 1-3), who has lost four straight.
The Freddies came out on a mission with a lopsided 25-9 win over the Blue Devils to set the tone. Danville’s offense stepped up a bit in the second set, but the Freddies were too much and took a 25-18 win. The Freddies were on top of their game in the final frame, nearly blanking the Blue Devils in a 25-1 win to clinch the match.
Partington recorded 28 assists out of the team’s 30 total kills to go with six digs. She was mostly setting up Jillian Bouton and Mya Bryant, who had 11 and 10 kills respectively. Cally Carpenter was dominant serving with eight aces, to go along with four digs. Anna Taylor had a team high seven digs in the match.
Danville’s statistics were unavailable at press time.
Wooster 3, Mount Vernon 0
The Wooster Generals (4-0, 0-0) have been hot out of the gate with four straight wins to open the season, with the most recent on August 31 with a convincing sweep over a tough Mount Vernon (6-2, 3-1) squad.
Wooster took the first set easily with a 25-14 win and the generals never let up with 25-16 and 25-17 wins in sets two and three.
Mount Vernon had 21 kills as a team and were led by Emma Dean and Kaitlyn Thompson who had six kills each. Dean added two aces, five blocks and four digs. Tori Burdette had 15 assists, nine digs, two blocks and four kills. Audrey Stuller was stepped up in a big way on defense with 33 digs in the match to lead the Yellow Jackets. Mount Vernon recorded 57 digs as a team.
Delaware Christian 3, Danville 0
Delaware Christian (6-1, 3-0) made quick work of Danville (2-5, 1-3) on September 2, with the Eagles taking a three set sweep win over the Blue Devils.
Delaware Christian came out swinging with a 25-12 win in set one. This was followed by lopsided victories of 25-14 and 25-17 in sets two and three.
Statistics for Danville were unavailable at press time.
Centerburg 3, East Knox 0
Centerburg 2, Worthington Christian 0
Centerburg was able to hold East Knox to only 10 total kills in their match on August 31, with the Trojans taking a sweep win over the Bulldogs.
Centerburg beat East Knox easily in sets one and two by scores of 25-12 and 25-11, and while East Knox made it a little closer in the final set, Centerburg was able to walk away with a 25-17 win to clinch the match in set three.
East Knox was led by Kensley McMillen with three kills, 10 blocks and a dig. Addison Davis had 15 digs, Kiara Knepp recorded 13 digs and Addison Mostaka had 12 digs. Sydney Opfer was the team’s setter, with seven assists.
The Trojans also faced Worthington Christian on Saturday, taking a 2-0 victory by scores of 25-11 and 25-16.
