Conference play highlighted volleyball action this week. | pixabay.com

Mount Vernon took a pair of matches and sweeps were frequent in local volleyball action.

Mount Vernon 3, Hilliard Bradley 2

Mount Vernon 3, Mansfield Senior 0

Kaitlyn Thompson and Tori Burdette were a dominant duo this week for the Yellow Jackets, with Mount Vernon going 2-0 with wins over Hilliard Bradley (3-1, 0-0) and Mansfield Senior (0-5, 0-3).

The Yellow Jackets came out of the gate with a 25-18 first-set win, but the Jaguars battled in the second set for a 25-19 win. In the third set, Hilliard Bradley continued their strong play with a 27-15 win to take a 2-1 lead. Mount Vernon woke up in the fourth set, beating the Jaguars 25-13 and in the decisive fifth set, the Yellow Jackets took a 15-10 victory to clinch the win.

Thompson stepped up at the outside hitter position for the Yellow Jackets, tallying 14 kills to lead Mount Vernon. She also had two blocks and five digs. Burdette, the senior setter, had 33 assists, 22 digs and eight kills in the match. Audrey Stuller had a standout day on defense, saving play after play with 27 digs. Seniors Emma Dean and Avery Lasater played well offensively as well, with 11 and eight kills respectively. Dean had three aces and Lasater had two of her own. Senior Ady Beaver added four aces in the win, as well as 15 digs. Fellow senior Jurnie Gleason recorded 19 digs.

Mount Vernon beat the Mansfield Senior volleyball team in dominant fashion on Tuesday night, with a sweep victory against its OCC foe. The Yellow Jackets came out swinging in the first set with a 25-7 win, and they never let up with a 25-4 set two win and a 25-11 set three victory.

Burdette had 17 assists, seven digs and a pair of aces to lead the Yellow Jackets to victory. Dean was the team leader in kills with nine. Gleason had six kills, five aces five digs. Stuller played well defensively and set the ball wall with 11 digs and eight assists. Beaver was a force from the serving line again with eight aces.

Fredericktown 3, Columbus Academy 0

Jillian Bouton was an offensive juggernaut against the Columbus Academy Vikings (1-2, 0-1) on Monday, leading Fredericktown (6-0, 2-0) with 15 kills in a 3-0 sweep at home to keep the Freddies undefeated.

The Freddies won set one 25-15, and then followed with set two and three victories of 25-20 and 25-11 respectively.

Bouton had 15 kills and two aces, 13 digs and two assists. Julia Partington set the ball well with 31 assists, and also chipped in defensively with nine digs. Cally Carpenter had 13 digs in the match, and added five kills. Mya Bryant put up seven kills and a dig.

Northmor 3, East Knox 0

Addison Davis of East Knox (0-3, 0-2) was all over the court on defense with 16 digs against Northmor (3-2, 1-1), but the Bulldog offense sputtered with only six total kills and took a 3-0 loss to the Golden Knights on Tuesday.

The Golden Knights cruised to a set one win by a score of 25-7 and continued to dominate in the second set 25-15. Northmor finished the match with a 25-23 victory.

Zoey Parker, Kiara Knepp and Kensley McMillen had two kills each. Parker also had a block, three digs and an ace. Knepp added three digs while Hiba Ezzarouali tallied eight digs, and Savannah Crawford recorded six digs for the Bulldogs.

Northmor’s statistics were unavailable at press time.

Cardington-Lincoln 3, Danville 0

Aubrey Ufferman and Lily Clark controlled the offense for Cardington-Lincoln (3-3, 1-1) on Tuesday, as the Pirates handily beat KMAC rival Danville (2-3, 1-2) in a sweep.

The Pirates won 25-18 in set one, 25-20 in set two and 25-19 in the final set.

Clark put up 13 kills and Autumn Holt had 10 kills to lead the offense, with Ufferman setting up kills well with a total of 30 assists to go with her five digs. Clark also had three aces and nine digs, while Holt had seven digs. Genevieve Longdorf recorded six blocks and Madison Caulkins had five blocks in the win for the Pirates. Freshman Lundyn Belvins played some solid defense with 11 digs in the match.

Danville’s statistics were unavailable at press time.

Highland 3, Marion Harding 0

Kameron Stover’s offensive prowess helped the Highland Lady Scots (4-1, 2-0) stomp all over Marion Harding Presidents (0-4, 0-2) on Tuesday, taking a 3-0 victory in a  MOAC conference matchup at home.

The Lady Scots beat the Presidents 25-11 in set one, 25-9 in set two and then finished with a 25-10 set three win.

Stover tallied 18 kills, two aces and seven digs for the Lady Scots. Fellow junior Larsen Terrill set Stover and the Lady Scots up throughout the night with 25 assists. She also recorded seven kills, 11 digs and three aces. Kendal Kline and Savanna Sanborn were difference makers serving with five and four aces respectively. MaKaylee Merckling chipped in on defense with nine digs.

Clear Fork 3, Mount Gilead 1

Clear Fork (1-5, 1-2) was a dominant force from the start against Mount Gilead (0-5, 0-2), and while the Indians were able to steal a set in the match, the Colts easily walked away with a 3-1 win on Monday night.

Mount Gilead was nearly completely silenced by the Colts in the opening set, being completely controlled from the start in a 25-5 rout. Clear Fork continued to own the match with a 25-10 set two victory. Mount Gilead woke up in set three and took a 25-22 win, but Clear Fork went back to their winning ways to finish of the Indians in a 25-12 set four win.

Johnstown-Monroe 3, Utica 0

Johnstown-Monroe (5-1, 2-1) won their fifth straight match in a sweep over Utica (4-4, 1-2) on Tuesday night, despite senior Lexi Wiegand of the Redskins turning in a commendable defensive performance with 20 digs.

The match started close with a 25-22 set one win for the Johnnies, but then the wheels fell off for Utica as the Redskins were beaten 25-19 and 25-16 and sets two and three.

Seniors Emilee Ellis and Hannah Shaver were the top offensive players with seven kills each. Ellis added 12 assists and nine digs, and Shaver had two digs. Alexa Gosnell split the setting duties with Ellis, putting up 11 assists to go with six kills. Gosnell had a solid defensive match with 10 digs on the night.

Wooster 3, Lexington 0

Sara Snowbarger and Megan Lantis combined for 28 of Wooster’s (3-0, 3-0) 40 kills in a sweep win over Lexington (3-2, 1-2) on Tuesday night.

The Generals and Minutemen had tight matches to start, with Wooster winning 25-21 in set one and 27-25 in set two. The Generals then crushed Lexington in the final set 25-12 to take the conference win at home.

Snowbarger had 15 kills, 15 digs, two aces, one block and one assist. Lantis delivered 13 kills and had 11 digs. Bri Hewitt had 31 assists in what was a great night for the sophomore setter.  She also had a pair of blocks and an ace. Josie Wright recorded nine kills for Wooster in the win.

New Philadelphia 3, Ashland 1

Kallyn Perks and Marisa Loader worked as a duo of setters combining for 31 assists to lead New Philadelphia to a 3-1 win over OCC foe Ashland.

Perks recorded 16 assists and Loader had 15 assists, and most of the time they were setting up Sidney Vandall and Ava Riesen, who had 12 and 10 kills respectively. Perks, Loader and Riesen each had three aces, as well.

New Philadelphia’s defense was on point throughout the match, totaling 66 digs as a team. Riesen added 16 digs and four blocks, and Loader had 13 digs on the night. Sidney Vandall put up 16 digs, saving point after point for the Quakers. Ellie Mason led the team with five blocks on defense.

Madison Comprehensive 3, West Holmes 0

Cielo Jacobus tallied 15 kills for Madison Comprehensive (1-4, 1-2) on Tuesday night, as the Rams picked up their first win of the season over conference rival West Holmes (1-4, 0-3) on Tuesday night.

The Rams beat the Knights by scores of 25-19, 25-18 and 26-24 to take the easy three set win. Jacobus not only had 15 kills, but also tallied two aces and five digs. Setter Aryana Rogers had 19 kills and eight digs. Karsyn Blust had 12 digs and an ace. Addy Farris recorded eight kills.
