Eleven student-athletes won the the ATHLETE of the WEEK honor more than once, two won it three times and one competitor took home the honor five times. The finalists: Dane Nauman (Highland), Grant Bentley (Northmor) and Nathan Streby (East Knox). And the MVN Male ATHLETE of the YEAR is Dane Nauman.

Central Ohio communities saw stellar play this season from its high school baseball student-athletes. Local teams had four athletes named to All-Ohio first teams.

This week, the spotlight is on the 27 male student-athletes who were selected as Athletes of the Week.

This week we present 30 different females who were chosen ATHLETE OF THE WEEK, and we will follow up next week with the 27 males who were also selected.

Highland’s Juliette Laracuente owned the MOAC track championships by earning four gold medals, setting one meet record and tying another, May 9-11 on the Marion Harding track.

A six-run second inning propelled the Mount Vernon Lady Jackets (19-6, 10-2) to handing the Dublin Coffman Shamrocks (2-19, 0-8) their 13th straight loss, 12-3, May 10.

High School Baseball May 6: Cardington-Lincoln 8, Loudonville 0; Centerburg 11, Newcomerstown 7; East Knox 10, Danville 0; East Knox 12, Danville 2; Mount Vernon 11, Newark Catholic 3; Utica 6, Lakewood 5

Highland 11, River Valley 1; Highland 11, Clear Fork 1: Highland (19-3, 13-0) secured the MOAC title with a pair of back-to-back 11-1 victories, thanks to strong pitching by Zach Church and Kort Sears.

The MV boys team won nine events at the Jackets Invitational at Mount Vernon High School on May 5.

The Mount Vernon High School boys tennis team competed in the Ohio Cardinal Conference tournament at the College of Wooster and Wooster High School last week.

On May 6, the Mount Vernon Lady Jackets won a romp and a tight game, beating Mansfield 15-0 and Tri-Valley 9-5, to improve to 18-6 on the season and 10-2 in OCC play.

Konnor Daughriety knocked in six runs and blasted a homer to lead the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets (16-4, 9-3) to an 11-3 win over Newark Catholic (14-5, 10-2) on May 6.

Highland 7, Galion 3. Abby Jordan provided some pop in the bat against Galion (5-9, 1-8), leading the Highland Fighting Scots (9-8, 7-3) to a 7-3 win on April 26.

Sports Calendar

On a day in which many local games were cancelled due to weather issues, the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets (16-5) hosted the New Philadelphia Quakers (16-4), and took home a come-from-behind 14-5 victory, May 3.
