The Mount Vernon High School boys tennis team competed in the Ohio Cardinal Conference tournament at the College of Wooster and Wooster High School last week. Both of MV’s doubles teams finished third in their respective flights and received bronze medals, while its singles players all won matches at the event and earned the Yellow Jackets a fourth-place finish.
MV’s first doubles team of juniors Pete Lawhon and Austin Anderson won their first-round match against Mansfield Madison. They then lost to Wooster in the semifinals but rebounded to defeat Ashland to finish in third place.
The Jackets’ second doubles team of junior Wyatt Rhoades and senior Toby Boggs won their first-round match against West Holmes. They then lost to Wooster 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 in the semifinals but got back on track to defeat Ashland for the bronze medal.
In singles, Mount Vernon’s first singles player, junior Quinn Hoffman, lost his first round to New Philadelphia 6-1, 6-4. He then defeated his opponent from Mansfield Senior 8-4 and finished the day with a loss to an opponent from Mansfield Madison.
MV’s second singles player, senior Alex Beuhrer, won his first round against New Philadelphia 6-2, 6-4. He then lost his semifinal match to a Lexington opponent and lost the consolation final to an opponent from Ashland.
The tennis team's third singles player, sophomore Andrew Conway, won his first match 6-0, 6-0 against New Philadelphia. He then lost his semifinal match against an Ashland opponent and lost his consolation final 8-6 to a player from Wooster.
Mount Vernon finished in fourth place in the eight-team conference. Lexington won the conference championship, each flight of the tournament, the player of the year award, and the coach of the year award.
