Mount Vernon 14, New Philadelphia 5

On a day in which many local games were cancelled due to weather issues, the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets (16-5) hosted the New Philadelphia Quakers (16-4), and took home a come-from-behind 14-5 victory, May 3. After allowing three first-inning runs to the Quakers, the Jackets were down 3-0, and in their half of the third, Kayden Packard singled to left to lead off the inning. After an out, Zac Clow singled and Konner Daughriety singled in the first MV run. A force play at third put two down and Daughriety stole third and scored on a catcher's throwing error to make it 3-2. New Philadelphia answered with two in the top of the fourth to increase their lead to 5-2, but Mount Vernon staged a comeback and then some, scoring nine runs in the bottom of the fourth, to take an 11-5 lead and they added on from there.

Mount Vernon's fourth-inning fireworks began when Jonny Askew was hit by a pitch, and Trevor Buttke walked. Logan Trace singled to load the bases and Packard grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Askew. Buttke scored on an error on the same play, to make it 5-4. A walk to Caden Rowland and some daring base running that forced an error, scored Packard. Another error brought home Rowland and gave the Jackets the lead for the first time, at 6-5. Daughriety singled to left, and an error loaded their bases. A wild pitch brought home Clow, who had reached on an error, and a hard grounder by Cash Finnell brought home two runs for a 9-5 Yellow Jackets lead. Singles by Askew and Buttke put two on and Trace singled to right to score Askew. Buttke scored the ninth run of the inning on a strategic move on the bases that ended with Trace being tagged out after the run had crossed home plate.

MV added three in the fifth on a one-run double by Daughriety and a two-run double by Finnell.

Mount Vernon pitcher Rowland shut down the Quakers the rest of the way.

Mount Vernon connected for 13 hits from seven players, with five batters completing multiple-hit games. Daughriety went 3-for-4, with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs to lead the Jackets. Askew, Buttke, Trace and Packard each had two hits, and Finnell belted a double and drove in four runs. Rowland went all the way on the mound for the win, pitching seven innings, allowing eight hits and striking out seven, walking two.
