Mount Vernon 12, Dublin Coffman 3

A six-run second inning propelled the Mount Vernon Lady Jackets (19-6, 10-2) to handing the Dublin Coffman Shamrocks (2-19, 0-8) their 13th straight loss, 12-3, May 10.

Mount Vernon took a 2-0 lead after one, and with the score tied at 2-2, MV erupted for six runs in the second. Presli Pope led off the second with a single, and after Grace Bates singled, a wild pitch put runners at second and third. Rylee Meyers then sacrificed in a run on a bunt. With one out, five consecutive singles made the score 7-2 and after a caught stealing, Hailey Rudrick stole home to make it 8-2, Mount Vernon, and the Lady Jackets never looked back.

Mount Vernon then scored a run in each of the remaining innings, allowing on one third-inning tally for the Shamrocks, to make it a rout.

Leading an 18-hit attack for Mount Vernon, Rudrick went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and three runs scored – she was also hit by a pitch; Kennedi Endsley went 3-for-4 and five Lady Jackets connected for two hits each, led by McKenzie Krownapple's two hits and three RBIs. Nine Lady Jackets reached on hits and seven players drove in runs.

Highland 12, London 7

Kate Clements and Stevie Asher were RBI machines for eighth-seed Highland (11-10, 8-5) against seventh-seed London (13-12, 9-6) in the first round of the state tournament on May 9, in a 12-7 win, in which the Fighting Scots exploded for 13 hits and nine RBIs.

The Fighting Scots went up 4-0 after one inning and kept the momentum going, scoring two more in the second inning. London answered with a second-inning run and then cut the lead to 6-5 with a four-run third. Both teams put a run on the board in the fifth inning and Highland scored a run in the sixth. The seventh inning was where Highland separated themselves from the Red Raiders with four runs, and while London scored a run in the seventh, it was too late for them to come back in a 12-7 win.

Clements was 3-for-5 with three RBIs, two runs and a triple to lead Highland. Asher was 2-for-5 with three RBIs in the win. Guinevere Jackson narrowly missed the cycle, going 3-for-4 with a double and a triple, to go with an RBI and four runs scored. Brianna Tuggle had a 2-for-4 day with an RBI and two runs.

Asher picked up the win in the pitching circle, going seven innings, allowing only three earned runs but seven total, eight hits, six walks, while striking out eight.

Cardington Lincoln 5, Northmor 3

Cardington-Lincoln (8-7, 7-3) toppled KMAC rival Northmor (13-6, 5-5) on May 9, with Morgan Powell supplying some thunder at the plate with a solo homer.

Northmor jumped out on top in the first inning with three runs, highlighted by a two-run shot by McKenna VanDyke.

Cardington scored a run in the first, then another run in the third cut the lead. In the top of the fifth inning, the Pirates came back and tied things up. Genevieve Longsdorf smashed a single on a 3-1 count to drive in a run in the inning. The Pirates tallied a run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to take the two-run victory.

Cardington-Lincoln had eight hits as a team, led by Longsdorf, who was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Powell was 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs and a solo homer. Ari Simpson was 1-for-4 and knocked in two runs. Hailey Littlemeyer drilled a double and Kayden Burchett hit a double and knocked in two runs.

Northmor recorded five hits as a team. VanDyke was a top performer with a two-run homer on a 1-for-2 day. Mahaila Strobel also drove in a run and went 1-for-3. Maddie Simpson was 1-for-4 with a run. Shelby Cooper was 1-for-3.

Longsdorf picked up the win in dominant fashion, striking out 16 Golden Knights over seven innings, while scattering five hits and three earned runs.

Shelby Cooper took the loss for Northmor, going five innings, allowing two earned runs and three total, three walks and also had three strikeouts. Kate Kissling pitched two relief innings, allowing one earned run, two runs, three hits and two strikeouts.

Fisher Catholic 11, Mount Gilead 1

Fisher Catholic (10-7, 8-3) went up early against Mount Gilead (4-15, 0-9) on May 9, cruising to an 11-1 win over the Indians.

The Irish went up 5-0 after one inning and then tacked on four runs in the third inning to go up 9-0. Mount Gilead put a run on the board in the fifth, but Fisher Catholic responded with two runs and secured a 10-run, mercy rule win.

Mount Gilead had five hits on the day. Greer Simpson was 2-for-3 with a solo homer to lead the offense. Freshman Lillian Ward had a solid day going 2-for-2. Alexis Staats was 1-for-1 with a double for the lone extra-base hit for the Indians.

Hayleigh Brown took the loss pitching two innings, allowing eight runs with four earned, eight hits and a walk.

Centerburg 9, Thomas Worthington 1

Centerburg (20-5, 11-1) connected for 10 hits, including a solo homer by Kayla Ferrell in a dominant 9-1 win over Thomas Worthington (4-9, 1-6) on May 8.

The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead after one inning, but that didn’t last long. Centerburg scored a run in the second and put across another in the third inning. The Trojans then scored three runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth inning to seal an easy victory.

Ferrell was 1-for-2 with the solo homer and three runs scored, and also stole a base. Shelby Morris had a big day at the plate as well, going 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, three RBIs, three runs, to go with a steal. Alyssa Harris was 1-for-4 with a double. Abby Herren smashed a triple and went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs.

Morris had batters swinging and missing with 10 strikeouts in a complete game, allowing four hits, one earned run and two walks.

Danville 9, East Knox 5

Emily Weckesser provided the firepower for Danville (17-6, 8-4), drilling a homer and knocking in a pair of runs in a 9-5 win over East Knox (14-6, 5-6) on May 8.

East Knox scored in the first, and Danville tied up the game in the second. Danville added a run in the fourth to take the lead, and then another in the top of the fifth to go up 3-1. East Knox tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, but Danville then put up three runs in the sixth and again in the seventh. East Knox managed a run each in the sixth and seventh, but it wasn’t enough for a comeback.

Danville’s Weckesser was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a run scored, a triple and the solo homer. Addison Mickley was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two steals. Grace Gronberg was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Taryn Mickley had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 while scoring three runs and stealing two bases. Abby Bocock and Cordi Richert also had a hit and an RBI apiece for the Blue Devils.

East Knox had a pair of homers in the game and had eight hits total. Natalie Smith was 2-for-3 with a triple, a homer and a pair of RBIs. Baylee Comer was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a homer. Mckenzie Wilson was 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored.

Bocock was the winning pitcher, going five innings, striking out six and allowing three earned runs, four hits and two walks.

Maddy Cotsamire took the loss for East Knox, going 6.2 innings, allowing seven earned runs, 10 hits and a walk, while striking out eight.

Northmor 4, Fredericktown 1

On May 8, Northmor took on KMAC rival Fredericktown, and Mahaila Strobel was able to show off her slugging for the Golden Knights with a homer to lead the way in a 4-1 win.

Northmor scored a run in the second on a Raelyn Fulk RBI double. The Golden Knights scored again in the fourth, and then tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth inning. The Freddies scored one run in the sixth inning. Each team had five hits in the game.

Strobel led the Northmor offense with a 2-for-3 day that included a solo homer and a pair of runs scored. McKenna VanDyke blasted a triple, had an RBI and a run and went 1-for-3. Fulk was 1-for-3 with the RBI double. Maddie Simpson had the other hit, a single, going 1-for-3. Taylor Cantrell also had an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Fredericktown was led by Jesenia Montalvo, who went 1-for-3 with a solo homer. Chloe Wells went 1-for-3 with a double. 

Kate Kissling was the winning pitcher with a seven-inning complete game, allowing five hits and an earned run.

Riley Rine took the loss, going 5 1/3 innings, striking out four, allowing four earned runs and a walk.
