The Licking County Humane Society recently assisted in a large-scale animal welfare case in Muskingum County, taking in more than 40 dogs with the help of the ASPCA.

The rescue operation occurred on June 24, when approximately 103 animals—including dogs, cats, and chickens—were seized from a property in Muskingum County. Of those, 42 dogs were transported to the Humane Society’s facility in Heath, Ohio, for immediate medical evaluation and care.

The case underscores why community support is critical. Many of the dogs were found in neglectful conditions, requiring medical treatment and safe housing. To meet these needs, the Humane Society is calling on residents to foster.

“Our priority is ensuring that these dogs receive the care, medical attention, and safe housing they need while this investigation moves forward,” Jane Tomsich, Executive Director of the Licking County Humane Society, said, according to the society's press release.

Tomsich emphasized the importance of collaboration in making the rescue possible.

“We are grateful for the collaboration with the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office and the ASPCA, as well as the dedication of our staff and volunteers at LCHS, who are committed to meeting the immediate and ongoing needs of these animals,” she said.

The Humane Society is now turning to the public for help. Foster homes are urgently needed to provide dogs with a safe, comfortable environment while they recover.

“We’ll provide everything: medical care, food, supplies, and support. All you have to provide is patience and a safe space,” the organization noted in its appeal.

Because the investigation remains active, details about the case cannot be shared publicly. However, once foster applications are approved, coordinators will provide families with more information about the dogs they will be caring for.

Beyond fostering, residents can support the Humane Society by donating, volunteering, or simply sharing the call for help on social media. Each share increases the chance of connecting a dog with the right foster family.

The Licking County Humane Society, located at 825 Thornwood Drive in Heath, is a nonprofit dedicated to rescuing animals, promoting responsible pet ownership, and improving lives through adoption and education.
