The Mount Vernon wrestling team competed at the Maumee Bay Classic at Oregon Clay High School on Jan. 13, where Alex Taylor took home first place and the team placed 23rd out of 57.

Ashland freshman Kennedy Lacey continues to stand out as a top young talent in the Ohio Cardinal Conference, as she led the charge in a 46-38 win over Mount Vernon (2-6, 4-9) for their second straight win for the Arrows (6-8, 4-4).

The three game skid came to a halt for the Ashland boys' basketball team (4-8, 2-5) in a 67-31 win over OCC rival West Holmes (1-8, 0-7), led by Isaac Stewart’s 15 point performance.

Camryn Cox posted career highs in points and rebounds, going off for a 32 point, 23 rebound double-double to lead Ashland (5-8, 3-4) to a 69-59 win over the Sandusky Blue Streaks (6-7, 2-2) on Jan. 10.

The Ashland Arrows (4-7, 3-3) traveled to Madison Comprehensive (3-6, 1-5) on Dec. 23 and freshman Kennedy Lacey was on top of her game with a 20 point showing to beat the Rams 53-30.

The New Philadelphia boys’ basketball team recovered from an opening night loss with a pair of wins to get above .500, thanks to a solid week on the court by Colton Slaughter.

Allie McMillen and Briar Cline of West Holmes were exceptional from the free throw line last week, combining for 13-13 to lead the way in a 54-40 win over Ashland in girls’ basketball action.

Corri Vermilya has been on fire out of the gate for the Loudonville girls' basketball team, and she has been setting school records along the way, becoming number one in steals in a 70-36 win over OCC rival Ashland.

The Ashland Arrows (1-3, 1-0) battled it out with Mount Vernon (1-2, 0-1) on Dec. 2, taking a close 48-45 win led by Kennedy Lacy with 16 points.

The Ashland girls’ basketball team (0-2, 0-1) took a tough 56-46 loss to open the season in a non-conference matchup with the Norwalk Truckers (1-0, 0-0) on Nov. 24 despite a double/double by Kennedy Lacy. The Arrows also lost the second game of the season to OCC rival Mansfield Senior (1-0, 1-0) on Nov. 28 by a score of 58-32.

The Ohio Cardinal Conference released their All-Conference selections and individual awards. The conference consists of high schools from Mount Vernon, Ashland, Lexington, Madison Comprehensive, Mansfield Senior, New Philadelphia, West Holmes and Wooster.

The Lexington Minutemen (5-5, 4-3) secured a playoff spot with a win 24-14 win over Ashland (5-5, 3-4) on Oct. 20.

Lexington High School was well represented at this year’s Ohio Cardinal Conference cross country meet, with both the boys’ and girls’ teams winning conference titles.

Ashland (5-4, 3-3) took it to Ohio Cardinal Conference rival Wooster (2-7, 1-6) on Friday night, handing the Generals their fifth straight loss in a 34-0 blowout led by a three touchdown effort by running back Cayden Spotts.

West Holmes (6-2, 4-1) has been an offensive juggernaut this season averaging 40 points per game, but last week against Ashland it took strong defense and a consistent running game to take a 20-6 win over the Arrows. (4-4, 2-3).

Ashland (4-2, 2-2) dominated Madison Comprehensive (1-5, 1-3) in a sweep victory for the Arrows at home in an OCC matchup.

Fueled by a big senior class on the 2022 Ashland squad, the Arrows finished last season with a 6-5 overall record and were 4-2 in OCC play. They ended the OCC season with a win over Lexington, and closed out the year with a playoff loss to Central Catholic.

Eight Ohio Cardinal Conference football teams have games scheduled this week.

Mt. Vernon Yellowjackets(1-0) and seven other Ohio Cardinal Conference football teams are scheduled to play this week.

The Ashland Arrows (6-5) start the season against the River Valley Vikings (5-6) on Aug. 18 at Ashland HS.
