Vermilya sets Loudonville steals record in win over Ashland

Corri Vermilya has been on fire out of the gate for the Loudonville girls' basketball team (4-0, 1-0), and she has been setting school records along the way, becoming number one in steals in a 70-36 win over OCC rival Ashland (1-4, 1-1). 

The Redbirds took a commanding 29-2 lead in the first quarter, dominating from the start. Vermilya went off for 17 points to lead the opening surge. Sophia Splanger had five points and Addison Wolford nailed a three in the first frame.

Ashland bounced back in the second quarter with an 18-16 advantage, led by a pair of threes by Madison Hoffman. Vermilya finished the half with 23 points and Loudonville was up 45-20.

The Redbirds took over in the third quarter with a 19-9 advantage, led by Vermilya’s 11 points. She would end her night playing only three quarter and putting up 32 points, eight boards and five steals. 

Mya Vermilya had 12 points, seven rebound, eight steals and five assists. Spangler scored 12 points to go with six boards and four steals. Sydney Strouse had five points, Alesha Felix scored four points, Wolford hit a three and Laila Manchester rounded out the scoring with a pair of free throws.

“I was pleased with our laser focus to start the game,” said Loudonville Coach Tyler Bates. "I thought that the effort and physicality that the girls brought tonight was outstanding."

The Arrows were led by Hoffman’s 11 points, two rebounds, one steal and one assist. She had three makes from downtown in the game. Kennedy Lacey scored 12 points and added eight boards and two assists. Camryn Cox scored six points to go with seven boards and an assist, Grace Tobias had five points and two steals. Cienna Steury scored three points and was solid on the glass with five boards. She also had an assist. Hannah Wade scored a point to round out the scoring.

Corri Vermilya and the Loudonville Redbirds also beat Mansfield Christian (2-1, 1-1) 84-18 last week, and she was at it again with a wild triple-double line of 26 points, 11 rebounds and 12 steals. She nearly had a quadruple-double as she had eight assists, to go along with a block.

Mya Vermilya scored 17 points and had three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Jena Guilliams had 15 points. Addison Wolford had eight points, four rebounds and three steals. Spangler had six points, five assists, five steals and three rebounds. Strouse had six points.

Mansfield Senior was led by Zy Davis with seven points.

“It is great to see our girls sharing the ball and making great decisions offensively,” Coach Bates said.

Vermilya broke the steals record when she hit 390, and after last week now has 406 steals and counting.
