Camryn Cox posted career highs in points and rebounds, going off for a 32 point, 23 rebound double-double to lead Ashland (5-8, 3-4) to a 69-59 win over the Sandusky Blue Streaks (6-7, 2-2) on Jan. 10.
The Blue Streaks went up 19-12 after one quarter, led by Ra’Kiya Collier’s 10 points. Kennedy Lacey had six points and Cox had four points for the Arrows. However, the Arrows would go off in the second quarter to regain the lead, 29-28, at halftime. Cox scored eight points in the quarter and 12 points at halftime.
The Arrows continued off the momentum of the second quarter, outscoring the Blue Streaks 24-14 in the third quarter. Cox had 11 points and Lacey had six points. Cienna Steury hit a three for the Arrows in the quarter, and Lauren Green drained a pair of buckets for four points.
The Blue Streaks outscored the Arrows 17-16 in the fourth quarter, but Ashland held on for the win with Cox leading the effort with nine points that included a three.
“Cox has made huge strides this season becoming a key asset to our growth,” said Coach Renee Holt. “Cox’s double-double is her career high, and we needed that with Lacey in foul trouble. We knew going into the game that it was a strength of ours when determining our matchups. Her patience in the key and ability to read the ball off the rim allowed for her to put stats up like that.”
While Lacey’s time on the floor was limited due to her foul trouble, she was still able to put up 16 points including 12 in the second half. Holt said her foul count never slowed her down, and she was able to still finish around the rim and be a major part of breaking the Blue Streak pressure.
“Laceys ability to see the floor as a guard, as well as work down low in the posts makes her to be a tough matchup for teams,” Holt said.
Rounding out the scoring was Steury with eight points, Green with six points, Madison, Alex Huckleberry with three free throws and Hoffman with two points.
While the Arrows trailed early, they were able to battle their way back with big third and fourth quarters to take care of business.
“We have had many close losses that were determined by a few plays which changed the momentum in the final quarter,” said Holt. “One word that would describe my team is fight. We get down early, or in crucial times and will continue to fight until the final buzzer. We are still building on our defensive attitude, which will help us set the pace and have better transitions in our offense.”
