The Mount Vernon wrestling team competed at the Maumee Bay Classic at Oregon Clay High School on Jan. 13, where Alex Taylor took home first place in the 215 pound weight class and the Yellow Jackets placed 23rd out of 57.

Mount Vernon had a score of 70 for 23rd place while Perrysburg took first with a score of 248.5

Coach Corey Firebaugh said this was one of the toughest tournaments in the state of Ohuo, and they took about three-quarters of the team to the meet. Taylor was the top Yellow Jacket, but Mavrik Gregory placed fifth. Blake Elliott, who attends East Knox but is also coached by Firebaugh and practices and travels with the team, placed sixth.

“We had an average performance up there,” Coach Firebaugh said. “We definitely lost a handful of matches that we should have won, but it was nice to have a few placers. It always feels good when you go to a tournament of that caliber and have one of your wrestlers win their weight class.”

Also on Jan. 13 the Mount Vernon JV "Orange" team competed at the Freddies Invite in Fredericktown and took eight out of 22 teams.

"Our young kids had a solid day of wrestling against Varsity competition," Coach Firebaugh said. "For them to finish eighth place out of 22 teams tells me that they are raising their level to compete against higher level of competition and that is great to see this time of year."

On Jan. 10 the Yellow Jackets faced Clear Fork in a dual meet and won 45-21, as well.
