Warren Garrison had two big quarters for the Cardington-Lincoln Pirates (14-7, 9-3) and led the charge in a 64-47 win over Mount Gilead (5-13, 3-9) in KMAC action on Feb. 10.

The Pirates went up 5-0 on a three by Garrison with 5:50 on the clock, and the followed quickly with another three by Journey Williamson to go up 8-0 early in the game. Williamson made it a 12-2 game when he stole a pass and took it to the hole. With 1:55 left, Garrison scored on a pull up jumper to make it an 18-6 advantage for Cardington-Lincoln. The Pirates took a big 21-9 lead after one quarter, and Garrison had nine points to lead all scorers.

After a Pirate bucket to start the second quarter, Hayden Somerlot sank a three for the Indians to make it a 23-12 game. Somerlot also had a blocked shot on the next Pirate possession, and then followed with his second three to make it a 23-15 game. The Pirates were up 25-15 and looking to tack on two more, but Jacob Wilt blocked a shot to keep it a 10 point game. Moments later, Somerlot drilled another three, and it was a 27-19 game in favor of the Pirates. The Somerlot show continued, with his fourth three of the quarter to cut the lead to five. At halftime it was a 31-24 lead for the Pirates.

Cardington-Lincoln started off hot in the third quarter with a three for Garrison to go up 34-24. They went up 50-29 on a fast break score by AJ Brehm off a steal, and then Garrison followed quickly with a three to take a 53-29 lead. They had a 53-31 lead at the end of three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, the Indians outscored the Pirates 16-11, but Cardington-Lincoln walked away with the conference win.

Garrison led all scorers with 21 points, while Merek McClure also hit double figures with 11 points.

Somerlot led the Indians with 15 points on the night.

Ashland 68, Mount Vernon 60

The Ashland Arrows (9-11, 6-7) had five players hit double figures in a 68-60 win over Mount Vernon (9-10, 7-6)  in OCC basketball on Feb. 9.

Ashland had a 10-9 lead in the first quarter, but the Yellow Jackets were looking to take the lead on a layup when Nathan Bernhard got in for a block at the basket. At the end of one quarter it was a 16-16 tie.

Mount Vernon had a 22-18 lead in the second quarter, but Pax Ediger grabbed a steal and took it to the hole to cut the lead to two. Later in the quarter the Yellow Jackets led 41-30, but Max Swaisgood took a shot from deep and cut the lead down to eight at halftime.

They inched their way back and suddenly it was a 46-44 game. Swaisgood came away with a steal and a fast break score to make it a two point game. Mount Vernon went up 48-44 and was looking for more, but Gabe Baith was able to get his hand in for a block near the basket to keep it a four point deficit. At the end of three quarters it was a 48-44 lead for Mount Vernon.

The Arrows battled in the fourth quarter, taking a 49-48 lead on a three for Reed Emmons. Mount Vernon hit a three to go up by two, but Baith responded quickly with a three of his own to make it a 52-51 lead for the Arrows. Tyler Sauder drilled a corner three to extend the lead to 55-51, and then Emmons sank his second three of the quarter to put Ashland up 60-53. The Arrows held on the rest of the way and took a big conference win.

It was a good shooting night for both squads, with Ashland at 51% and 50% from three, and Mount Vernon at 48% and hitting 45% of their threes. Ashland led 25-23 in boards, 13-12 in assists, 6-5 in steals and both teams had three blocks. 

Baith led the Arrows with 14 points, while Ediger and Bernhard had 13 points apiece. Sauder and Swaisgood each had 10 points in the win.

Isaiah Columber scored 11 points for the Yellow Jackets.

West Holmes 46, Madison Comprehensive 40

Madison Comprehensive (1-19, 1-12) have lost 17 straight games, but they hung tight for most of the game against West Holmes (3-15, 1-12) despite falling 46-40.

The Rams went on a 7-0 run to start the game, highlighted by a steal Cameron Kuhn on an inbound pass, that he dished off to Kaleb Gordon for a layup. Collier Cline was able to put the Knights on the board first with a three. The Knights battled to get the score to 9-9 with a minute left when Manny Camacho came away with a steal. He found Sam Sprang open for a three to give West Holmes a three point lead. 

With 23 seconds left in the quarter, Cline jumped in front of a pass for a steal to thwart a Rams attempt at cutting the lead. However, in the closing seconds Owen Wigton drilled a three for the Rams to tie things up 12-12 at the end of one.

Both teams scored eight points in the second quarter, as well, and it was a 20-20 game at the half. Nate Fair and Camacho showed off some stellar defense for the Knights with a block each.

Camacho’s strong defense continued with a block on a jumper with 6:10 left in the third quarter and the score 22-22. West Holmes outscored the Rams 12-7 in the quarter, and it was a 32-27 lead for the Knights after three.

In the fourth quarter Sprang nailed another three to put West Holmes up 37-27. Madison Comprehensive scored the next five points, but then Collier hit from deep to make it a 40-32 game.

West Holmes had a 14-13 edge in the fourth quarter and were able to walk away with their third win of the season and first in the Ohio Cardinal Conference.

The Knights had a 33-21 rebounding advantage and 4-2 advantage in blocks. Madison Comprehensive led 13-8 in assists and 6-4 in steals, and the Rams shot 37% compared to 28% for the Knights. The three ball and free throws proved to be a difference maker, with West Holmes leading 31% to 27% from deep and 75% to 57% from the line.

Cline led the Knights with 13 points and Sprang put up 10 points in the win. Fair tallied nine points, Manny Camacho had eight points, Koyer Miller had four points and Nate Sprang rounded out the scoring with two points.
