The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets girls basketball team extended its strong start to the season with two impressive victories this past week, improving their overall record to 9-2.

The Jackets first took on Marion Harding on December 31, securing a 44-33 win in front of their home crowd. Mount Vernon was led by standout Kymber Bell, who dominated both ends of the court. Bell finished the game with 27 points and 15 rebounds, powering the Yellow Jackets to a decisive win. Alongside her, Isla Graham contributed 7 points to help maintain the lead throughout the game. The team’s defense, combined with solid scoring, allowed Mount Vernon to hold off any attempts by Marion Harding to get back into the contest.

Bell’s performance was a key factor in the game, as she displayed her ability to score in various ways while also controlling the glass. Head coach Nathan Short praised her all-around effort, noting how she continues to elevate her game as the season progresses. With the win, Mount Vernon began the week on a high note, setting the stage for their next challenge.

On January 4, the Jackets traveled to face River Valley in another non-conference matchup. Though the game was a bit more closely contested, Mount Vernon emerged victorious once again, winning 39-27. As in the Marion Harding game, Bell led the team in both scoring and rebounding, finishing with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Her ability to dominate the paint and control both ends of the floor was critical in maintaining a steady lead throughout the contest.

Maddy Jones provided valuable scoring support, contributing 9 points in the win. Her timely baskets helped ensure Mount Vernon maintained a comfortable lead, especially during crucial stretches of the second half. Kaitlyn Thompson also played an important role, pulling down 12 rebounds, which gave the Jackets multiple second-chance opportunities and kept River Valley from mounting a serious comeback.

The game against River Valley showcased Mount Vernon’s balanced team play, as the Jackets utilized strong individual performances alongside their collective defensive efforts. With Bell’s presence in the paint and the contributions of her teammates, Mount Vernon managed to keep River Valley at bay, even as the game remained within reach for the visiting team.

Mount Vernon now moves to 9-2 on the season and will look to continue their momentum as they head into their next matchup. The Yellow Jackets will travel to Newark Catholic for a road game against the Green Wave on January 7 at 7:15 p.m. Newark Catholic, currently 5-5 on the season, will look to provide a tough challenge for Mount Vernon. The Yellow Jackets will be hoping to build on their recent success and keep their winning streak alive as they enter the heart of their schedule.
