Yellow Jackets win 10th straight with back-to-back games wins over Rams

Mount Vernon improved to 13-3 on the season, with the Yellow Jackets beating the Madison Comprehensive Rams in back-to-back days this week. This was the 10th straight win for the hot Mount Vernon squad, who are now 8-2 in the Ohio Cardinal Conference, good for second.

Konner Daughriety and Cam Firebaugh combined for 11 strikeouts in a two hitter against the Madison Comprehensive Rams, leading the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets to an 8-0 win on April 24.

Daughriety went the first five innings, picking up the win with one hit and one walk allowed. He struck out nine batters. Firebaugh finished out the final two innings with one hit and two strikeouts.

Kayden Packard got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single. With two outs, Isaiah Columber doubled to center, bringing two runs around to score. Nolan Hershberger popped a single to right that landed and Columber was able to score on an error to make it 4-0 out of the gate.

In the bottom of the third inning, Packard led things off with a hard single to left. Jonny Askew the bunted for a single and got all the way to third on an error. Packard came around to make it 5-0.

In the fifth inning, Packard reached on an error and was driven home on an Askew RBI single to right. Hayden Higgins made a seven run lead when he singled and Askew scored on an error. Caden Thiebert hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Higgins, and the Yellow Jackets held on the rest of the way for the 8-0 victory.

Packard was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs. Columber went 1-for-3 with the two-run double, and scored a run. Askew was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Thiebert, Higgins and Daughriety all had steals in the game.

The two hits from Madison Comprehensive were singles by Grady Spurlock and Ethan Glasgo.

Ashton Taylor picked up the loss allowing eight runs with four earned, eight hits, and three walks, while striking out two batters in five innings. 

The Yellow Jackets traveled to Madison Comprehensive the next day and made it back-to-back wins over their OCC foe, with Packard throwing a complete game to beat the Rams 4-2.

In the top of the first inning, Ezra Kurek hit a two out double, and then came around to score on a double by Packard in the next at bat. Askew followed with an RBI single to left to go up 2-0. 

Daughriety led off the fourth inning with a double and was driven in on a double in the next at bat by Kurek. After two straight outs, Columber hit a grounder to third that was mishandled, and Kurek came home to make it 4-0. 

The Rams made it a 4-1 game in the fifth on a Glasgo sacrifice fly, and then Kuhn scored on an error in the seventh, but Mount Vernon hung tight for the win.

Packard allowed two earned runs, eight hits and a walk, while striking out six batters to get the win for Mount Vernon. Liam Stone pitched well in the loss for the Rams, going all seven innings allowing four runs but three earned, and seven hits, while striking out one batter.

Daughriety was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored. Kurek went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Packard also hit a double and drove in a run in a 1-for-2 day. He also scored a run. Askew drove in a run and went 1-for-3.
