Daughriety smashes two homers in first week of season to lead 3-1 Yellow Jackets

Mount Vernon baseball goes 3-1 to start the season, | Mount Vernon baseball X page

The Mount Vernon baseball team started off the season 3-1, which included a pair of conference wins, led by senior Konner Daughriety’s two homers and 10 RBIs.

Daughriety is 7-for-14 with seven runs, 10 RBIs, two walks and two homers to start the season. Junior Kayden Packard has also been hot with a 6-for-11 showing (.545 average), with three doubles and three RBIs. Junior Zac Clow has a team high eight hits (.533 average), with three doubles and two RBIs.

Packard has also pitched six innings of shutout baseball, with an opposing batting average of .182 in the early stages of the season.

Mount Vernon 8, Westerville South 7

Mount Vernon kicked off the regular season with an 8-7 win over Westerville South at home, fending off a late game comeback attempt by the Wildcats.

Freshman Nolan Hershberger was the star of the day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Junior Ezra Kurek had a double and went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Daughriety had a 2-for-4 day, knocking in a run and scoring two.

Junior Jagger Dohn got the win on the mound, pitching five innings, allowing three earned runs, five hits and a walk, while striking out four. Junior Camden Firebaugh got the save.

Mount Vernon 7, Lexington 2

The Yellow Jackets started conference play at home against Lexington on March 26, picking up a 7-2 win with Daughriety homering to lead the charge.

Daughriety was 2-for-4 with a double, a homer, four RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Kurek had another solid day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run. Junior Zac Clow was 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Daughriety got the win, pitching four innings, allowing two runs but none earned. He gave up two hits and walked four batters, while striking out three.

Mount Vernon 14, Lexington 1

The Yellow Jackets had back-to-back games with the Minutemen, and they wasted no time in this one in a 14-1 win where they piled on 15 hits on March 27.

Mount Vernon had a four run first inning, and then tacked on two runs in the second and two runs in the fourth to make it a 8-0 game. Both team scored a run in the fifth inning, but Mount Vernon added five more runs in the sixth to cap off an impressive offensive explosion.

Daughriety belted a homer, a double and five RBIs in the win, going 2-for-4 and scoring three times. Kayden Packard was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Hershberger knocked in two runs despite not getting a hit, and junior Isiah was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Junior Caden Thiebert was 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI. 

Packard was lights out on the mound in the win, going six innings allowing one unearned run, four hits and a walk, while striking out five batters.

Lincoln 5, Mount Vernon 4

The Yellow Jackets scored a run in the first, but then gave up five runs in the fifth inning to Lincoln, recording their first loss of the season, 5-4, on March 28.

Clow was 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI. Packard was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Dohn started the game and pitched four innings, allowing four earned runs, seven hits and a walk, with three strikeouts. Thiebert picked up the loss with one inning pitched, one earned run, one hit, three walks and a strikeout. Senior Jonny Askew pitched well in relief, going two i
