Mount Vernon Nazarene University has broadened its social-emotional learning curriculum and technological capabilities at the Esther Jetter Preschool through a grant from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The university received a significant boost in funding, totaling $76,400, which originated from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services for this endeavor.

Preschool Director Kelly Gumm emphasized that as children progress in their preschool years, they demonstrate an increased interest in interactive play with others. According to Gumm in an MVNU press release, "Learning social-emotional skills through play helps them navigate relationship building, take turns and share, become aware of other people’s feelings, collaborate, compromise, problem solve, learn self-control etc." Gumm further stressed that these skills would create a strong foundation for future academic and life success.

The state had initiated this grant funding as part of its concerted efforts to stabilize childcare programs across Ohio. This initiative is targeted at mitigating costs related to the COVID-19 pandemic including staff recruitment and retention, expanding access to technology in classrooms and improving social-emotional learning opportunities for students.

To support these learning outcomes instructional materials were acquired including sensory bins, dramatic play resources, sensory mats and the Spots of Emotion set. Jessica Grubaugh - Associate Dean for the Jetter School of Professional Studies mentioned that such equipment stimulates creativity enhances comprehension and makes learning more fun.

Classrooms are now equipped with two new televisions to facilitate movement activities and use educational videos effectively. These devices make it possible for all students including those with limited resources to explore their surroundings in unique ways. Additionally, a listening station has been set up with stereo headphones allowing students to listen to music or audiobooks enhancing multi-sensory literacy experiences. Wi-Fi boosters have also been installed throughout the preschool space ensuring stable connection across various devices.

Furthermore, due to this grant's financial backing, it will be possible for the preschool to hire and retain highly proficient and effective teaching staff through increased funding for personnel costs, training and professional development.

Esther Jetter Preschool serves roughly 65 students with programs designed for children aged 3 and 4, as well as Pre-K students. For additional information one can visit mvnu.edu/preschool or contact Kelly Gumm at kelly.gumm@mvnu.edu.
