Lexington (8-2, 5-2) has been red hot with five straight wins, and on Tuesday the Minutemen swept New Philadelphia (5-4, 4-3) with Ava Brown piling on kills and assists in the win.
The first set was tied at 7-7 when Sidney Vandall broke the tie for New Philadelphia to take the lead. Then tied at 8-8, Lexington’s Bella Temple recorded a kill to give the Minutemen a one-point advantage. She also gave them a 10-9 lead on a block/kill. Lexington had a 16-14 advantage, but Kallyn Perks of the Quakers served an ace to cut the lead to one. Tied 16-16, Kylie Thornton put up a kill to put Lexington up one point. The game was tied again at 18-18, and Vandall gave the Quakers a one-point lead on a kill. Ava Riesen gave the Quakers a 25-24 lead on a kill. Ava Brown made it a 26-25 game in favor of the Minutemen, and this one went down to the wire, with Lexington taking a 27-25 win.
New Philadelphia came back to win 25-17 in set two, where New Philadelphia controlled most of the match. Perks broke a 4-4 tie with an ace and Sarah Ciereszewski had an ace to go up 15-9. Perks put the Quakers up 17-12 and Riesen had the set-winning kill.
The third and fourth sets were all Lexington, who won 25-13 and 25-17 respectively. In the third set, Savannah Wolf had an ace, while Lehnart and Temple had blocks. In the fourth set, Tatum Stover had an ace of her own to take the set win.
Brown led the Minutemen with 25 kills, 20 assists, and five blocks in the win. Stover was also a force on both offense and defense, tallying 20 kills and 32 digs. Temple did a great job setting them up with 32 assists, but also got in on the scoring action with eight kills and a pair of aces. Jenna Lehnart led the team in the blocks department with seven.
