Yellow Jackets win home tri-meet over Freddies, Knights

The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets boys and girls track teams won both ends of their April; 19 tri-meet against Fredericktown and West Holmes on the Yellow Jacket Stadium track. 

The Mount Vernon Lady Jackets put up 78.66 points to outdistance Fredericktown with 51.83 and West Holmes with 44.5. On the boys’ side, the Jackets finished with 78.5 points, the Freddies had 58, and the Knights scored 35.5.

In the boys meet, Mount Vernon won nine events, Fredericktown won three, and West Holmes took gold in five events.

Sam Williams-Dixon of West Holmes won the 100-meter dash in 11.49, but Mount Vernon runners took the next eight spots, with Dylan Dowell claiming second in 11.51 and Jesse Foster third in 11.82.

Ethan Young (MV) took the 200 meters in 23.57, with Hunter Looney third at 24.80. Fredericktown’s Caedmon Platt was fourth in 25.19. The Jackets went 1-2-3 in the 400 meters with Young, Matt Salvucci and Dowell. The 800 was a Jacket sweep as well, with Jojo Ernst, Eric Marofksy and Brady Wiles going 1-2-3. Freddie runners Zane Stricker and Peyton Hogg came in fourth and fifth.

The Freddies got on top of the podium in the 1600-meter run with Silas Hoam and Xavier Platt going 1-2, and Mount Vernon’s Marofsky ran third.

In the 3200 meters, Logan Eggert won for MV, and Fredericktown’s Noah Smith and Owen Krabill came in 2-3. MV was 2-3 in the 110-meter hurdles (Dominic Fuscaldo and Trenton Clark), and MV’s Logan Taylor won the 300-meter hurdles with teammate Fuscaldo arriving second. MV also took the 4x100 relay, and Fredericktown won the 4x800 relay.

In field events, the long jump went to MV’s Dowell at 20’8," and Fredericktown’s Zack Luckmeier claimed second in both the discus and the shot put.

The girls’ events winners were closer than the final score, as Mount Vernon participants won eight events, Fredericktown competitors won six, and West Holmes won three.

MV’s Amaris Middleton won the 100-meter dash in 13.20, beating Fredericktown’s Ashley Cockrell. Middleton also won the 200-meter dash with teammate Alexis Strong finishing third. MV’s McKenna Brokaw led a 1-2-3 podium sweep with Strong and Sarah Phillips in the 400, and Jacket Sophie Zoldak took gold in the 800 over Fredericktown’s Sadie Sanders. Zoldak won her second gold in the 1600-meter run over Lady Freddie Kelsey Scott. Celeste Swihart won gold for Fredericktown in the 3200-meter run, beating MV’s Ainsley Bonaudi and Alex Couch.

Lady Jacket Marissa Rutter edged Brokaw for gold in the 100-meter hurdles, and Fredericktown’s Ashley Cockrell beat MV’s Rutter and Freddie Elsa Homan in the 300-meter hurdles.

The Freddies won the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x800 relays, and in field events, Freddie Emily Feeney was second in the high jump. Brokaw won the long jump with MV teammate Makena Laslo third; and Swihart and Sydney Wilson placed 1-2 for Fredericktown in the pole vault, with Laslo third. Brooklyn Thayer won the discus for MV with Freddie thrower Hannah Bressi third.
