Ohio State Highway Patrol investigates fatal crash near Centerburg Knox County

The Ohio State Highway Patrol has announced that its Mount Gilead Post is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on June 14, 2025, on US Route 36 near milepost 3 in Centerburg, Knox County.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, at approximately 6:25 p.m. on June 14, a 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling east on US Route 36 left the roadway and struck both a traffic sign and a utility pole. The motorcycle was operated by Harry Young IV, aged 39, of Mount Vernon, Ohio. Samantha Hedrick, aged 36 and also from Mount Vernon, was a passenger. Neither individual was wearing a helmet.

Young sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported by Central Ohio Joint Fire District to Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, where he was later pronounced dead. Hedrick suffered serious injuries and was taken by Delaware County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to Ohio Health Grant Hospital. The investigation is being led by the Ohio State Highway Patrol with assistance from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Central Ohio Joint Fire District, and Delaware County EMS.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is part of the Ohio Department of Public Safety and provides statewide public safety services including traffic enforcement and emergency response. It is headquartered in Columbus and divided into nine districts with about 1,600 troopers and additional support staff. Officers serve in specialized roles such as drug interdiction and crash reconstruction.

Colonel Charles A. Jones serves as the superintendent of the Ohio State Highway Patrol since August 12, 2022. He began his career in 1994 with the 126th Academy Class and has served at several posts including Marion and Delaware.
