Perfect on the diamond and tennis court winnersThe Mount Vernon News sports department’s 34th ATHLETE OF THE WEEK nominations continues the established procedure of spotlighting student-athletes’ skills and performances on the fields and courts of action. Based on performances, we ask ADs, coaches and the community to nominate one boy and one girl from their athletic programs to compete against other schools’ nominations.
Jackets place second at Watkins Doubles Classic

The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets tennis team sent four duos to the 2022 Watkins Memorial HS Doubles Classic on May 12, and with a win and a second-place finish, the Jackets finished second overall. Mount Vernon Nazarene University's Ramser Tennis Courts were the site for competition, which drew Mount Vernon, St. Francis DeSales, Newark and Watkins Memorial high schools' boys tennis teams to the fray.

This week we have a pitcher who was perfect and a batter who was nearly perfect and who came up big all game.

Lady Jackets sting the Tygers twice 17-0 and 17-0. On a day in which Mount Vernon’s Lady Yellow Jackets didn’t need many runs, they got 17 of them – twice, in shutting out and demolishing the Mansfield Tygers 17-0 and 17-0, May 5.

Yellow Jackets win home tri-meet over Freddies, Knights

The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets boys and girls track teams won both ends of their April; 19 Tri-Meet against Fredericktown and West Holmes, Mount Vernon High School on the Yellow Jacket Stadium track. The Mount Vernon Lady Jackets put up 78.66 points to outdistance Fredericktown with 51.83 and West Holmes with 44.5. On the boys’ side, the Jackets finished with 78.5, the Freddies had 58 and the Knights scored 35.5.
Jackets tennis looks to beat OCC leaders

The Mount Vernon High School tennis team is facing a challenge. According to tennis coach Steve Tier, in his first year as Jackets’ boys coach, what faces the Jackets on the court is the ability to “play at a level where we can win against members of our conference that we often lose to, such as Ashland, Wooster, and Lexington. Getting a win over one of those teams would achieve one of our goals.”
Two Jackets wrestlers commit to college scholarships

Mount Vernon High School's wrestling program finished a successful 2022 season, and two of their most decorated student-athletes spring boarded their high school accomplishments on the mat with college commitment signings at the MVHS Field house, Thursday, April 14 during a 3 p.m. event. The signing event announced that senior Dylan Hartman has committed to move on to Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio, and senior Colton Spurgeon will next wrestle at Ohio Northern University, in Ada, Ohio.
Jackets hit the pool Boys tie Shelby; girls show promise

Chill may be in the air, but the high school swimming season is under way. The season opener for Mount Vernon was a meet at Shelby, Nov. 30 that saw the Mount Vernon men tie Shelby 56-56, while the women were outpaced by Shelby 107-61.
