Jackets hit the pool Boys tie Shelby; girls show promise

Chill may be in the air, but the high school swimming season is under way. 

The season opener for Mount Vernon was a meet at Shelby on Nov. 30 that saw the Mount Vernon boys tie Shelby, 56-56, while the girls were outpaced by Shelby, 107-61.

Mount Vernon assistant swimming coach Staci Brenneman said that Yellow Jacket swimmers who stood out included Jillian Beever (freshman), Maia Tazwell (junior) and James Frazee (senior), as they all completed their first 400-meter swim events of their career. Sarah Misarti (sophomore) completed her 400-meter event with a time of 6:48.87. First-year swimmers Andrew Conway (freshman, 2:01.62) and Tyler Davidson (junior, 2:04.71) placed second and third in the boys 100-meter backstroke event. Thomas Sant (freshman) finished in second place in the boys 50-meter freestyle with a time of 29.27. 

Brennamen said it was “a great way" to debut his high school swim career.

Clare Clarkson, Liz Cline, Bre McCluskey and Rylee Jarosz took second place in the girls 200-meter medley relay with a time of 2:27.97.

Joey Kennedy, Sant, Will Laymon and Landon Rush took first place in the boys 200-meter medley relay with a time of 2:21.15.

Taylor Couch, Julie King, Misarti and Olivia Adams took first place in the girls 200-meter freestyle relay with a time of 1:57.49.

Kennedy, Sant, Rush and Laymon took second place in the boys 200-meter freestyle relay with a time of 2:01.54.

Clarkson, King, Jarosz and Anna Rhodeback took second place in the girls 400-meter freestyle relay with a time of 5:17.62.

Bryan Sabula, Kennedy, Frazee and Rush took first place in the boys 400-meter freestyle relay with a time of 5:30.70

McClusky took second in the girls 100-meter breaststroke and second in the girls 100 butterfly. Rhodeback won the girls 200-meter freestyle, and King was second

Sabula took second in the boys 200 IM, and Kennedy was third. Sant was second in the boys 50 freestyle, with Owen Merriman third and Rush fourth.

Brenneman said this was the kickoff, and the 2021-22 MVHS swim team is looking forward to the season. 

“The team has great enthusiasm and love for the water, and we are looking to assisting with their success to come in the following weeks,” she said.
