Lady Jackets sting Tygers twice, 17-0 and 17-0

On a day in which Mount Vernon’s Lady Yellow Jackets didn’t need many runs, they got 17 of them – twice – in shutting out and demolishing the Mansfield Tygers, 17-0 and 17-0, on May 5.

In the opener, Emily Burke pitched a perfect game, and the Lady Jackets put the game away in the first with a 12-run onslaught.

Burke needed only 59 pitches and threw 42 for strikes in getting all 15 Mansfield batters she faced; eight of them were strikeout victims. She started with two ground outs and a strikeout and ended with a strikeout and two ground outs for her perfecto.

Mount Vernon had no idea of what was to come on the mound when it attacked in the first. Lilly Erb led off with a single followed by a Kennedi Endsley single and an error to score Erb. Mac Schlosser homered to center to make it 3-0. McKenzie Krownapple lined a single to center and with one out, a single by Rhyli Pope made it 4-0, and a double by Addison Christopher made in 5-0. Kiannah Harris singled, and with two outs, two errors and a hit batter made it 8-0. A double by Krownapple and a home run by Emma Calkins put up an even dozen for MV in the first. It added five in the second for the final of 17-0.  The Lady Jackets got 13 hits, with Harris going 3-for-3 and Krownapple 2-for-2.

In Game 2, it was almost the same game. This time, Mount Vernon scored 11 in the first, five in the second and one in the fourth, and two Lady Jacket pitchers held the Tygers to one hit in shutting them out again, 17-0. In this one, Addi Parker pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and two walks and striking out 11 while throwing 77 pitches – 51 for strikes. Calkins came in to get the last batter. The only hit Parker allowed was a lead-off single in the fourth.

In the Mount Vernon first, with one out, three consecutive doubles, by Carli Kennedy, Schlosser and Krownapple, a single by Calkins and a home run by Pope accounted for the first five runs. A hit batter, a second out and a Kelly Sullins triple followed by a single, a walk, a fielder’s choice, a single and an error put the score at 11.

For the game, Krownapple and Pope homered for Mount Vernon, and Endsley and Sullins hit triples. Of the Lady Jackets’ 13 hits, Krownappole went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs to lead the offense as 11 Lady Jackets got hits.

The Lady Jackets improved to 15-7 and 6-1 in Ohio Cardinal Conference play.
