Macee Marcum had five hits, drove in five runs and scored four times to lead the Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team to a season-opening doubleheader sweep over Lourdes on Friday, March 5, in Sylvania.

Marcum’s effort earned her Crossroads League Hitter of the Week.

Marcum had five hits, including a double, in eight at-bats for the Cougars (2-0), who won both games in five innings by scores of 14-1 and 11-2, respectively.

MVNU pounded out 17 hits as a team, using a six-run second inning to blow open the first game. Kylee Martin had four hits, scored twice and drove in a run; Marcum and Katelyn Perkins each drove in three runs, and Courtney Knepper had three runs on three hits and drove in a pair. Marcum had three hits, including a double, and scored twice.

Hannah Barco picked up the win after tossing four innings where she allowed one run (earned) on a hit and three walks and struck out four.

Jenna Harris took the loss for the Gray Wolves (0-2), allowing eight runs (all earned) on nine hits and two walks over two innings.

Kayla Gauthier had Lourdes’ lone hit and drove in a run.

Marcum had two hits, two runs and two RBIs to lead the Cougars in the second game. Kylee Matern had two hits and two runs, Katelyn Perkins had two hits and a pair of RBIs, and Madison Ruhl drove in three runs and scored once for MVNU.

Sheridan Sullivan allowed one run (earned) on four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over four innings to pick up the win in the second game for the Cougars.

Hailey Cramer had two hits, a run and an RBI; and Ashley Riley took the loss for the Gray Wolves in the second game. Riley allowed six runs (two earned) on three hits and five walks and struck out one over 2.2 innings.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

The 4x8,000-meter team of Colin Gaines, Clayton Slemmons, Justis Paul and Garrett Gemmaka ran a time of 7 minutes, 53.33 seconds to finish ninth, leading MVNU at the NAIA national championship meet last week in Yankton, South Dakota.

Gemmaka was also solid for the Cougars in the 1-mile run (4:23.74); while Paul, Slemmons, Gaines and Luke Couchman finished 15th (11:00.79) in the distance medley relay.

Kyler Dickey was 12th in the shot put (15.41 meters).

The women’s distance relay team of Kaylin Shackelford, Missy Emery, Kaitlin Meade and Morgan Forney was 14th (12:58.14); and Kasey Keith was 15th in the shot put (12.44).

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Nine sets, nine set wins for MVNU over the weekend. 

The Cougars capped their weekend with a three-set win over Midway on Monday, March 8, at Ariel Arena in Mount Vernon. It came just two days after MVNU made quick work of Cornerstone and Carlow in a tri-match sweep at home on Saturday, March 6.

Spencer Stanley and Landon Ewers paced the Cougars (7-6) with nine kills apiece. Ewers added three solo blocks and an assisted block to his ledger in a 25-18, 25-14, 25-19 win over Midway.

Jaysen Matsumoto helped out with 17 assists and three aces, Daniel Skrzypchak had 11 digs and Caden Donaldson served four aces for MVNU.

Adrian Constant had eight kills and Daniel Cogo had 22 assists to pace Midway (5-6).

In Saturday’s first match, a 25-14, 25-22, 25-17 win over Cornerstone, Stanley paced the Cougars with 11 kills, Matsumoto had 33 assists and six digs, and Donaldson had 10 digs to go with five kills.

Logan Chagdes had six kills, Maximilliano Hernandez had 18 assists and eight digs, and Alex Hekman had three aces for Cornerstone (1-14).

In a 25-10, 25-7, 25-13 win over Carlow in the nightcap, Ewers had seven kills and four digs; Matsumoto had seven assists, seven digs and four kills; Luke Fuente had four blocks, four digs and three aces; and Jordan Hoag had seven digs and three aces for the Cougars.

Hunter DeSefano had four kills and three digs, DJ Zedalis had 10 digs, and Coulter Chaffee had six assists and seven digs for the Celtics (0-4), who also lost to Cornerstone in straight sets.

BASEBALL

MVNU had a tough time with Crossroads League foe Spring Arbor, dropping three of four over the weekend.

Nick Carroll had two hits and drove in three runs to lead host Spring Arbor to a 6-2 win in the opening game of a doubleheader on Monday, March 8.

Jackson Kitchen and Ben Mast each scored twice, and Brandon Haynes drove in two runs to lead Spring Arbor to a 5-1 win in six innings in the second game.

MVNU exploded for 10 runs in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday, March 5, but the bats went quiet in the nightcap to end the day with a split of its Crossroads League-opening games in Mount Vernon.

Casey Kalman had three hits, drove in three runs and scored a run; and Aaron Saal had three hits, two RBIs and scored twice to lead MVNU to a 10-3 win over Spring Arbor in the first game.

Josh Petit was the tough-luck losing pitcher for the Cougars in Friday’s second game, a 2-1 setback in seven innings.

Petit allowed just two hits and two runs, both of which were unearned. He struck out nine batters and walked three.

Gavin Harris picked up the win for Spring Arbor, allowing one earned run on two hits and three walks while striking out four over four innings.
