Roundup: Freddies rally by Golden Eagles in DIII tourney

The Fredericktown boys basketball team used an 18-4 run in the first half to overcome a slow start. But it was a 14-0 run in the second half that put the Freddies on top for good in a 52-46 win over Madison Plains in the second round of the Division III district tournament on Saturday, Feb. 27, in Fredericktown.

Ty Hatfield led sixth-seeded Fredericktown with 17 points, nine rebounds and three steals; and Kaid Carpenter added 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Lincoln Cunningham had eight points and two assists, Caleb Sherrif had seven points and a pair of assists, and Thomas Caputo had five steals and three assists to go with three points for the Freddies (21-2).

Carpenter sparked the run in the first half that saw Fredericktown go from down 16-4 to a two-point lead just before halftime.

Andrew Hunt and Dalton Cunningham each scored in the final minutes to give the 13th-seeded Golden Eagles a 24-22 lead at the break.

Adyn Gammell, who scored a game-best 18 points, buried a 3-pointer with 4:23 left in the third to give Madison Plains a 32-29 lead. He also had four rebounds and three steals for the game.

Caleb Sheriff sparked the deciding run with a 3-pointer that gave the Freddies the lead for good at 34-32 with 3:14 left. He added a pair of free throws, and Hatfield hit a 3 of his own and then turned a steal into a layup to cap the 14-0 run that put the game out of reach.

The Eagles (9-12) rallied late, closing within four on a Dalton Cunningham 3 with 40 seconds left, but the Freddies held on.

Cunningham finished with nine points and five boards, Gabe Garrison had eight points and Ty Sollars dished out six assists for Madison Plains.

Westerville Central 65, Mount Vernon 42

Mount Vernon was right there with host Westerville Central for a half. But the second-seeded Warhawks turned up the defensive pressure in the second half and ran away with a 65-42 victory in the second round of the Division I district tournament on Friday, Feb. 26, in Westerville.

Quincy Clark scored 19 points, Tasos Cook had 14 points, Donovan Hunter added 13 points and Landon Tillman chipped in 12 points for the Warhawks (18-2), who outscored 38th-seeded Mount Vernon 30-11 in the second half.

Hudson Rohler scored 13 points, and Owynn Gleason had nine points on three 3-pointers for the Yellow Jackets (8-14).

Worthington Christian 60, Northmor 24

Top-seeded Worthington Christian used a stout defense to get by visiting Northmor 60-24 in a Division III district tournament second-round game on Saturday, Feb. 27, in Worthington.

DJ Moore went for 21 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals; Kobe Buford had 14 points and eight rebounds; and Tyler Kindberg added 13 points, three rebounds and a pair of assists to pace the Warriors (23-1), who led 28-12 at the half.

Graesin Cass scored seven points, and Kooper Keen added five points and seven rebounds to pace the 21st-seeded Golden Knights (4-19).

Harvest Prep 73, Utica 55

Nylee Shaheed scored 12 of his 21 points in the first half to help host Harvest Prep start strong and roll to a 73-55 victory over Utica in the second round of the Division III district tournament on Saturday, Feb. 27.

Mario Davis had 19 points and Terrance Kee added 14 points for the second-seeded Warriors, who built a 36-19 lead at the break.

Utica, seeded 19th, played closer in the second half and won the fourth quarter, 20-16. Seth Cooper scored a game-best 24 points to lead the way.

Johnstown 85, Mount Gilead 35

Host Johnstown jumped out to a 25-5 lead after one quarter and rolled to an 85-35 win in the second round of the Division III district tournament on Saturday, Feb. 27.

Jake Lusk scored 22 points and added three rebounds and three assists to lead the third-seeded Johnnies (19-5).

Tylar Cox had 19 points and three assists; and Gavin Foe added 10 points, five rebounds, four assists, four steals and a pair of blocks for Johnstown.

Matthew Bland led 15th-seeded MG (7-16) with eight points, Elijah Chafin had seven points, and Turner Fitzpatrick and Quade Harris added six points apiece.

Also: (1) Cardington 72, (11) Delaware Christian 48 in a Division IV district tournament second-round game on Saturday, Feb. 27.
