The Fredericktown girls basketball team used a 21-4 third quarter to cruise to a 57-32 win over visiting Danville in Knox Morrow Athletic Conference play on Saturday, Jan. 16.
Gabby Daniels scored 18 points, and Taylor Overholt and Jacklyn Nussbaum each added eight points to lead the Freddies (11-4, 7-3), who led 23-20 at the half after trailing 12-10 after one quarter.
Brooklyn Hess helped the Blue Devils (9-4, 5-4) to the fast start with eight of her 15 points in the opening frame. Ella Proper added 10 points for Danville.
Mount Gilead 47, Highland 34
Host Mount Gilead found its form in the third quarter, outscoring Highland 14-5 to take control in a 47-34 win in KMAC play on Saturday, Jan. 16.
Holly Gompf poured in 18 points and Candace Millisor added 11 points to lead MG (11-4, 7-4), which led 21-18 at the half before breaking it open in the third.
Emma West scored 11 points and Peyton Carpenter added eight points to lead the Scots (5-10, 3-8).
Cardington 59, Northmor 30
Host Cardington woke up in the second quarter, posting a 21-4 spread and rolled from there to a 59-30 win over Northmor in KMAC action on Saturday, Jan. 16.
Beth Hardwick and Karsyn Edwards scored 14 points each and Kambry Edwards added 13 points to lead the Pirates (13-0, 10-0).
Lexi Wenger had eight points and Reagan Swihart added seven points to lead the Golden Knights (3-12, 2-9), who were tied 9-9 at the end of one quarter.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Fredericktown’s stout defense came up big even as its offense sputtered. The fifth-ranked Freddies held host Cardington to three points in the fourth quarter en route to a 36-26 victory in KMAC play on Friday, Jan. 15.
Caleb Sheriff scored 11 points and Lincoln Cunningham had 10 points to lead the Freddies (12-0, 7-0), who took control with a 12-6 third quarter after trailing 17-15 at the break.
Trey Brininger led the Pirates (9-4, 5-3) with 11 points.
Utica splits over the weekend
Utica bounced back from a loss on Friday, Jan. 15, with a 72-42 win at Granville Christian Academy in non-league play on Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Fifth Street Gymnasium in Newark.
Zach Heckman scored 16 of his team-best 17 points in the first half as Utica jumped out to a 36-23 lead at the break.
Seth Cooper scored 16 points, Beau Dunlap added 12 points and Roman Gamble chipped in nine points for Utica (3-9, 0-6), which snapped a six-game skid.
Visiting Johnstown came out strong with an 18-5 first quarter and cruised to a 51-36 victory at Utica in LCL play on Friday, Jan. 15.
Jake Lusk led the Johnnies (9-3, 6-0) with 15 points, Jake Lusk had 12 points and Caleb Schneider and Josh Potter added 10 points apiece.
Owen Storts had 10 points, Beau Dunlap added eight points, and Seth Cooper and Sean McCutcheon chipped in seven points each for Utica, which used a 13-5 fourth quarter to close the gap.
Mount Gilead 64, Danville 43
Matthew Bland scored 18 points and Elijah Chafin had 15 points to lead host Mount Gilead to a 64-43 win over Danville in KMAC play on Friday, Jan. 15.
Jackson Huffer added 11 points for MG (4-7, 3-5), which opened up a 36-19 lead at the half.
Darren Mickley led the Blue Devils (1-11, 0-7) with 13 points, Walker Weckesser had nine points and Levi Lyons had eight points.
Clear Fork 48, Northmor 37
Graesin Cass scored 11 points and dished out four assists, but host Northmor (2-9) couldn’t keep up with visiting Clear Fork, falling 48-37 in non-league play on Saturday, Jan. 16, in Galion.
Brady Tedrow scored 15 points, Jared Scott had 13 points and Ben Blubaugh added 11 points to lead the Colts (4-7).
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Gabby Suarez’s basket with 1:52 remaining stood up for 23rd-ranked Indiana Wesleyan, which held on for a 68-67 win in Crossroads League action on Saturday, Jan. 16, in Marion, Ind.
Rylee Pireu scored 19 points and added five rebounds and Hope Custer added 15 points to lead the Cougars (6-8, 3-4), who led 23-10 after one quarter and pushed the lead as high as 14 in the second quarter before IWU made its comeback.
Anne Secrest scored 19 points, Suarez finished with 17 points, Jordan Reid added 13 points and Madison Davis chipped in 10 points for the Wildcats (13-3, 7-1).
Lily Krieger had 13 points and Taylor Gregory went for 10 points and nine rebounds for MVNU.
