Sydney Lyons had the Midas touch in the Mount Vernon girls soccer team’s 6-0 win over Loudonville in non-league play on Sept. 29 at Yellow Jacket Stadium. Lyons scored three goals and her pass led to a fourth to lead the Yellow Jackets.
All signs pointed to a good night when she sent a cross that was deflected into the goal by a Loudonville defender to give the Jackets a 1-0 lead with 24:03 left in the first half.
From there, Lyons couldn’t miss. She scored three goals in a span of approximately 15 minutes to help the Yellow Jackets roll.
Senior Julianna Parry made her Senior Night a memorable one. The defender got put up top late in the first half and scored her first career goal.
McKenna Brokaw dished out three assists in the first half and Lexi Rapp added a goal in the second half, assisted by Ella Conway.
Madeline Henricksen had four saves and Emma Phillips added another for Mount Vernon.
On Oct. 1, Mount Vernon fell 8-0 at Ashland in Ohio Cardinal Conference play. The Jackets fell to 5-6 on the season and 2-3 in league play.
Highland 4, Mansfield St. Peter’s 1
Emma Hinkle scored all four goals to lead the Scots to a non-league win over visiting St. Peter’s on Sept. 30 in Sparta.
The win was the fifth in a row for Highland (7-3-1).
BOYS SOCCER
Ashland’s Ramon Ramirez scored two goals, including what turned out to be the game winner with 11 minutes left in the match. His effort lifted the host Arrows to a 3-2 win over Mount Vernon in Ohio Cardinal Conference play on Sept. 29 in Ashland.
Avery Hixon also scored for the Arrows (6-4-1, 5-1). Andrew Mills had an assist and Braxton Mathias recorded five saves.
Isaiah Jones and Mays Gunderson each tallied goals for the Yellow Jackets (6-5-1, 2-3). Andrew White dished out an assist and Christian Dean stopped 11 shots in goal for MV.
Highland 3, River Valley 3
Dylan Thomas and Austin Smith each had a goal and an assist. But Highland played host River Valley to a 3-3 draw in non-league play on Sept. 29 in Caledonia.
Zane Sheets tallied the other goal for the Scots (5-3-3), who are 3-0-2 in their last five matches.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Highland continued its bid for a perfect season with a 25-6, 25-16, 25-21 win over Cardington-Lincoln in Knox Morrow Athletic Conference play on Sept. 30 in Sparta.
Zoya Winkelfoos served up five aces for the Scots (15-0, 9-0), who have yet to lose a set this season. She keyed an 11-point run in the first set.
Kendall Stover led with 12 kills, Makenna Belcher added 10 kills and a pair of blocks, Ashlynn Belcher had nine kills and Emma West chipped in eight kills and two blocks for Highland.
Audrey Brininger had seven kills, Liz Long had nine digs and Kyleigh Bonnette had 20 assists to lead the Pirates (11-4, 7-2).
Fredericktown def. East Knox 25-8, 25-18, 21-25, 25-10
Audrey Bouton and Lindsey Boeshart caught fire to lead visiting Fredericktown to a four-set win at East Knox in KMAC play on Sept. 29 in Howard.
Bouton led the Freddies (6-6, 5-4) with 16 kills and three aces and Boeshart had 14 kills, 23 digs and five aces.
Katie Mull dished out 19 assists and served up four aces, Julia Partington added 13 assists and 11 digs and Grace Sipes had 12 digs for Fredericktown.
Madi Annett had 11 digs and four aces, Brenna Remy had 14 digs and three kills, Shanda Melick had eight assists and three kills and Anjel Montgomery had four kills to lead the Bulldogs.
Northmor def. East Knox 25-4, 25-22, 25-15
East Knox recovered in the second set from a lopsided first, but never got over the hump in a three-set loss at Northmor on Oct. 1 in Galion.
Montgomery led the Bulldogs (1-14, 0-10) with four kills and three aces and Remy had 13 digs and five assists.
Centerburg def. Mount Gilead 25-16, 25-18, 25-11
Gracie Wolford dished out 22 assists and added five digs to lead Centerburg to a straight-set win over Mount Gilead in KMAC play on Oct. 1.
Taylor Scowden had eight digs, six kills and a pair of blocks and Savannah Dehart had 12 digs and four aces to lead the Trojans (5-10, 4-6).
Stella Weisbrod had 11 digs and five kills, Kennedi Glenn had five kills and a pair of blocks and Autumn Kennedy had seven kills for Centerburg.
Lakewood def. Utica 12-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20, 15-7
Host Utica jumped out to a two-set advantage, but ultimately fell to Lakewood in five in Licking County League play on Oct. 1.
Bella Ellis had 15 assists, 12 digs, four aces and 2.5 blocks to lead Utica.
Lily Borem led Utica with 13 kills and five blocks, Laini Crawmer added eight kills, Emilee Ellis had 15 assists, Sydni Cunningham had 12 digs and Georgia Gamble had four aces for Utica (2-13, 2-9).
