The Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon announced on May 11 that it held the 16th Annual John Philip Sousa Awards Luncheon, recognizing one outstanding student from each of the county’s high schools for their musicianship, leadership, dependability, and loyalty. The event took place in Mount Vernon and included participation from parents and band directors.
The John Philip Sousa Award is described as the most prestigious award for high school band students. According to the club, John Philip Sousa was a renowned composer and band leader who strongly supported school music programs. Each student recipient was introduced by their respective band director before being presented with a trophy and certificate.
The 2026 award recipients were Allison Wihelm from Centerburg High School, Ethan Swendal from Danville High School, Hunter Calbert from East Knox High School, Sala Glandon from Mount Vernon High School, Elizabeth Dudgeon from Knox County Career Center, and Caleb Smith from Fredericktown High School.
According to the announcement, Sousa’s music continues to inspire those who hear and perform it. The ceremony aimed to recognize both the achievements of the students and the support provided by their families.
