After more than 14 years as treasurer of Mount Vernon City Schools and nearly three decades in public school financial leadership, Judy Forney is retiring, leaving behind a legacy of fiscal stewardship and service recognized at both the local and state levels.
Mount Vernon City Schools announced Forney's retirement this week, celebrating her career, which included serving as the district's treasurer since December 2011. Throughout her tenure, Forney oversaw the district's finances, helping maintain stable operations while supporting students, staff, and the community. The district thanked her for the leadership and dedication she brought to the role over the past decade.
In recognizing her retirement, the district highlighted the lasting impact Forney made through her experience and commitment to responsible financial management. Her work also drew praise from Ohio Auditor of State Keith Faber earlier this year, whose letter acknowledged her years of public service. The district reflected on her career, stating:
"After nearly three decades in public school financial leadership, including serving as Mount Vernon City Schools' Treasurer since December 2011, Judy is closing an incredible chapter of dedicated public service."
The announcement also emphasized the role Forney played in helping the district succeed during her time as treasurer.
"For more than a decade, Judy has been a steady and trusted presence in our district," Mount Vernon City Schools stated. "Her care, experience, and thoughtful leadership have made a lasting difference for our schools, staff, students, and community."
Faber echoed those sentiments in a May 12 letter congratulating Forney on her retirement and recognizing her contributions to public education across Ohio.
"Since assuming your role in December 2011, and with nearly three decades of experience in public school financial leadership, you have demonstrated unwavering dedication to responsible fiscal stewardship," Faber wrote.
In his letter, Faber said Forney's financial leadership helped Mount Vernon City Schools consistently maintain healthy funding levels and strong cash balances, allowing the district to operate efficiently while remaining fiscally responsible. He also cited her previous work with the Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center and NCOCC, as well as her elected service on the Lexington Local Schools and Mansfield City Schools boards of education, describing it as evidence of "a lifelong commitment to public service."
Faber added that Forney's guidance, together with the work of district staff, supported stable operations across classrooms, transportation, and facilities, benefiting students, families, and the broader community.
Mount Vernon City Schools concluded its announcement by thanking Forney for her years of dedicated service and wishing her the very best in retirement.
