For the second week in a row, there was no clearer choice for Mount Vernon Athlete of the Week Award than Corri Vermilya, who has been red hot leading the Loudonville girls’ basketball team to a 4-0 start.

Corri Vermilya has been on fire out of the gate for the Loudonville girls' basketball team, and she has been setting school records along the way, becoming number one in steals in a 70-36 win over OCC rival Ashland.

December 16 will be a huge day for the community at Loudonville High School as there will be not only be a basketball triple header, but also the induction of 19 alumni athletes into the Loudonville-Perrysville All-Sports Hall of Fame.

The Division VI and VII All-Ohio football teams were announced on Dec. 4 with a number of Mount Vernon News coverage area players selected.

The Mount Gilead boys’ basketball team knocked off Loudonville 59-55 on Dec. 1 to start the season, led by an 18 point showing by Rowan Fitzpatrick.

The Loudonville girls’ basketball team started off the year 2-0, with the win over Mount Gilead a big one as the Indians were last year’s KMAC champions.

Loudonville’s shooting guard Corri Vermilya is no stranger to accolades, and the junior guard from Loudonville picked up another after a terrific opening week, as she was named Mount Vernon Athlete of the Week.

The rebuilding process has been going for several years for the Loudonville boys’ basketball team, but Coach Jim Bates sees the work the team has put in paying off this season with a group of talented juniors with varsity experience under their belt leading the charge.

The Loudonville girls’ basketball team was first in the Mid-Buckeye Conference and went 17-7 overall last year, and Coach Tyler Bates thinks this team will only be better now that they have the necessary experience led by their star senior guard Corri Vermilya.

The Knox Morrow Athletic Conference released their All-KMAC football selections for 2023. The conference includes Cardington-Lincoln, Centerburg, East Knox, Fredericktown, Mount Gilead, Loudonville and Northmor.

Jax Lester threw for three touchdowns and Blake Elliott ran for two scores to lead East Knox (6-3, 5-1) to a 42-28 win over KMAC rival Loudonville (3-6, 2-4) for their second straight win.

To hit the 1,000 assist milestone in a volleyball career is a major achievement, but notching 2,000 assists is something that puts you high up in the state record books. This is exactly what Payton VanSickle did recently against Northwestern, and her strong play setting the ball for Loudonville has earned her Athlete of the Week honors.

It was a monumental night for Loudonville (7-7, 5-1) senior setter Payton VanSickle, who notched her 2,000th assist despite the Redbirds taking a loss to the Northwestern Huskies (9-5, 5-4).

Centerburg jumped out to a 21-0 lead and never relinquished it against Loudonville (2-3), defeating the Redbirds 37-15.

Outside hitter Maya Heffelfinger and setter Payton Vansickle were an offensive powerhouse combo for Loudonville (5-3, 3-0) against Crestline (2-8, 0-3) on Tuesday night, with the Redbirds easily sweeping the Bulldogs.

The Mount Vernon News sports department is starting its third year of the MVN ATHLETE of the WEEK, a school-year weekly feature that spotlights local student-athletes and their schools.Our first ATHLETE of the WEEK WINNERS for 2023-24 are Payton VanSickle, Loudonville volleyball and Kolton Stover, Highland football.

A conference football newcomer last season, Loudonville gave the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference (KMAC) football teams a run for their money in 2022, so much so that the school will join the KMAC in all sports next year.

The Danville Blue Devils took their 3-3-2 record into the final game of the North Central Ohio Summer League softball season on July 18 against the Loudonville Redbirds, who finished their regular season at 16-7. Danville was 18-7 during the regular season.
