With the new year right around the corner, it is already getting to be the second half to the winter athletic season. There are a number of big matchups down the stretch that could mean big things for conference rankings and playoff placement for local girls' basketball teams.

The Lady Trojans of Centerburg (4-2, 3-1) had a pair conference wins last week over Mount Gilead and East Knox, with junior forward Kayla Larimore now averaging 18.8 points per game to lead the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference.

The Centerburg boys’ bowling team took on Mount Gilead last week, taking a 1758-1600 loss to the Indians.

The Centerburg boys' basketball team (1-1, 1-0) bounced back from an opening night loss with a victory over Utica (0-2, 0-1) in non-conference action.

It was a thrilling matchup in KMAC girls' basketball action between rivals Danville (3-2, 1-1) and Centerburg (2-2, 1-1) on Dec. 9, with Ella Proper and Kylee Hess combining for 43 points in a 71-69 double overtime win for the Blue Devils.

The Centerburg Trojans won their first conference matchup of the season with a 46-25 win over the Northmor Golden Knights on Dec. 6, with Kayla Larimore stuffing the stat sheet in the victory.

The Division IV and Division V All-Ohio football teams were announced on Dec. 5 and a number athletes in the Mount Vernon News coverage area were included, including eight players from West Holmes.

The Centerburg girls’ basketball season is underway, and the team started with a 44-23 win over the Fairbanks Panthers on opening night in a non-conference matchup. They followed with a 54-48 loss to Wynford on Dec. 2 to go 1-1 in the early season.

The Mount Vernon boys’ basketball team opened up the winter season in a non-conference matchup with Centerburg, and Quentin Rowland was the man of the hour putting up a quality night scoring, rebounding and playmaking for the Yellow Jackets in a 58-32 victory on Dec. 1.

The following events are scheduled to take place in Centerburg this month.

It was a big year for the Centerburg volleyball team, as the team won the Knox Morrow Conference and made to the third round of the OHSAA Division III Central 1 tournament. Now they can add individual accolades to the season resume, as Stella Weisbrod was named KMAC player of the year and Abigail Boudinot was coach of the year.

The following school events are scheduled to take place in Centerburg this week.

The Knox Morrow Athletic Conference released their All-KMAC football selections for 2023. The conference includes Cardington-Lincoln, Centerburg, East Knox, Fredericktown, Mount Gilead, Loudonville and Northmor.

Blake Sipes went off for 242 yards rushing and four total touchdowns to lead the Frederickown (5-5, 4-3) Freddies to a 32-14 win over Centerburg (4-6, 3-4), which qualified them for the postseason.

The No. 3 Centerburg Trojans took a 3-1 win over No. 7 Bishop Ready in the second round of the OHSAA Central 1- Sectional/District volleyball tournament on Oct. 21.

The Centerburg volleyball team recently won the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference for the first time since 2012, and a big part of that is due to the strong play of Stella Weisbrod, who is the Mount Vernon Athlete of the Week.

Northmor (7-2, 5-1) has been on a tear lately and on Friday night they won their fourth straight game 48-7 over Centerburg (4-5, 3-3), with quarterback AJ Bower throwing for five touchdown passes.

Centerburg (18-3, 11-1) finished the regular season tied for first with Fredericktown (16-4, 11-1) in the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference (KMAC) by taking a conference win over the Freddies last week in a sweep. This was the first time since 2012 Centerburg has won the conference.

Centerburg hosts KMAC rival Northmor on Friday night with only two games left in the regular season.

Cole Delaughder stepped up in a big way for KMAC leading Danville (8-0, 5-0) in a 55-22 win over Centerburg (4-4, 3-2), with the senior running back rushing for four touchdowns to lead the charge. It was the eighth straight win for the undefeated Danville squad.
