These former Mount Vernon News area high school standouts will be in action in the week starting Mon March 4.

The Centerburg Trojans beat Worthington Christian on Feb. 23 to take the Sectional title, and the playoff journey continued for the girls’ basketball team three days later with a district semifinal win over Cardington-Lincoln.

Local boys’ wrestling teams recently competed in their sectional championships last weekend, and below are some highlights of winners and top wrestlers in their respective meets.

The Knox Morrow Athletic Conference wrestling tournament took place last weekend at Northmor High School, with Elgin winning the title and the Northmor Golden Knights as this year’s runner up.

For the second straight season, Fredericktown (13-5, 10-2) clinched a Knox Morrow Athletic Conference (KMAC) title after winning their eighth straight game in a 57-52 victory over Centerburg (8-11, 6-6) on Feb. 10.

The Lady Trojans (15-3, 9-2) knew going into their game against Fredericktown (11-9, 6-6) that they would need to stifle the offensive play of Cally Carpenter, who trails only Centerburg’s Kayla Larimore in scoring this season. This tactic was a success and Centerburg was able to lock up their first Knox Morrow Athletic Conference (KMAC) title in a decade, with a 49-39 win on Feb. 8.

Centerburg (13-3, 8-2) made it four wins in a row with a 47-34 road win over KMAC rival Fredericktown (9-8, 6-5), with Kayla Larimore putting up 20 points and the Lady Trojans doing a great job containing second ranked scorer Cally Carpenter.

The Mount Gilead boys’ basketball team (4-10, 2-7) snapped a nine game winning streak with a 48-45 overtime win over Centerburg (7-7, 5-4) on Jan. 27, with Gage Baker coming to the rescue with a 19 point showing.

Centerburg High School hosted the first ever Centerburg Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Jan. 27, and Trojan Coach Alec Szanati was not only happy with his team’s fourth place finish but also for how the event went off without a hitch.

Centerburg’s Kayla Larimore has been the top scorer in the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference for most of the season, and on Jan. 26 she led all scorers with 19 points in a huge 41-32 win over Cardington-Lincoln (11-7, 8-3).

The Northmor Golden Knights (10-4, 6-1) have been rolling and took another conference win on Jan. 20, bearing Centerburg (6-6, 4-3) 63-52 in a come-from-behind victory led by their top scorer Grant Bentley.

The Centerburg wrestling team placed 13th out of 18 teams with a score of 77 at theRon Thomas Sr. Wrestling Invitational at Jonathan Alder on Jan. 20. Bishop Watterson won the event with a score of 265.

Kayla Larimore once again paced the offense for the Centerburg girls’ basketball team, putting up 19 points to beat the KMAC leading Cardington-Lincoln Pirates 52-44 in front of a home crowd.

Trevin Harris and Grayson Reynolds combined for 48 points, leading the Centerburg boys’ basketball team to a 69-62 win over Cardington-Lincoln on Jan. 13.

Centerburg’s Kayla Larimore has been one of the top girls’ basketball players in the Mount Vernon News coverage area all season, and last week she was especially effective averaging 26.5 points per game and in a pair of KMAC wins. Her terrific play has awarded her the Mount Vernon Athlete of the Week honors.

It was a battle between two of the top teams in the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference on Jan. 12 with Centerburg (9-2, 5-1) hosting Danville (11-4, 6-2), and the Trojans were lights out shooting while playing outstanding defense in a 57-21 win.

The Centerburg boys’ bowling team has won two out of the last three matches, with Michael Wallace and Jesse Rings leading the charge for the Trojans.

The Centerburg Trojans (7-2, 3-1) made it five straight wins with a 55-39 victory over Utica (4-5, 3-1), where Kayla Larimore and Tiara Sheppard combined for 38 points in a Dec. 29 home non-conference battle.

Isaiah Sule was on fire for Centerburg (3-3, 2-1) last week, putting up 28 points to lead the Trojans to a 59-37 win over KMAC rival Mount Gilead (3-4, 1-2).
