Mount Vernon’s boys volleyball team advanced in the Division II state tournament with a 3–1 playoff victory over St. Francis DeSales on May 14.

The neutral‑site clash was part of the 2026 OHSAA Boys Volleyball State Championships, and the Yellow Jackets wasted no time asserting themselves.

Mount Vernon opened the match with a commanding 25–12 first set, overwhelming the Stallions with sharp serving and aggressive net play. The Jackets followed with another strong effort in the second, taking it 25–17 to build a two‑set cushion. DeSales clawed back in the third, winning 25–19 to extend the contest, but Mount Vernon regrouped quickly and closed out the fourth 25–17, sealing the 3–1 triumph and moving forward in the bracket.

The Yellow Jackets’ season leaders have been pivotal in shaping their identity. Outside hitter Cooper Swanson has hammered down 252 kills, giving Mount Vernon a reliable scoring option. Setter Kenton Strouse has orchestrated the offense with 388 assists, keeping hitters in rhythm and spreading the ball effectively. Libero Kirklin Kanuckel has anchored the back row with 226 digs and 427 receptions, providing the defensive backbone that allows the Jackets to transition smoothly from defense to attack.

As a team, Mount Vernon has produced 728 kills, 142 serving aces, and 740 digs this season, numbers that underscore their ability to pressure opponents on both sides of the ball. Against DeSales, that balance was evident—offensive firepower in the opening sets, defensive resilience in the closing frames, and the composure to finish the job when momentum shifted.

The victory improved Mount Vernon’s playoff record to 2–0, a mark that highlights their ability to rise in high‑stakes moments. While their overall record sits at 9–15, the Jackets have shown growth and grit against tough competition. Their 3–1 neutral‑site record reflects a team capable of performing away from familiar surroundings, a valuable trait in tournament play.

With the win, Mount Vernon continues its pursuit of a deeper run in the state championships. The Jackets’ blend of offensive punch, defensive grit, and postseason composure makes them a dangerous contender in Division II, and their triumph over DeSales was another reminder of their ability to deliver when the lights are brightest and the pressure is at its peak.
