Lady Cougars fall to Taylor University despite strong performances

The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's basketball team faced a challenging road game against Taylor University, resulting in a 77-66 loss. The match, held on January 17 in Upland, Indiana, saw the Lady Cougars starting strong but ultimately falling short against their opponents.

The game began with both teams tied at four points each within the first four minutes. Anna Swisshelm was responsible for MVNU's initial points. As the first quarter progressed, Taylor University started to pull ahead, thanks to Lily Shepherd's two three-pointers that helped them lead 22-16 by the end of the period.

In the second quarter, MVNU attempted a comeback with quick baskets from Kylie Leibacher and Shepherd, narrowing the gap to 22-20. Despite their efforts and Shepherd's continued success from beyond the arc, Taylor maintained control and led 42-33 at halftime.

Taylor extended their lead in the third quarter before MVNU fought back to tie the game at 51-51. However, Taylor regained momentum and ended the third quarter tied at 54. In the final quarter, Taylor secured their largest lead late in the period and ultimately won by 11 points.

Leibacher led MVNU's offense with 22 points and six rebounds. Shepherd also contributed significantly with another 22 points. Despite these performances, MVNU was outrebounded by Taylor and committed more turnovers.

Mount Vernon Nazarene University will next face Saint Francis in Fort Wayne on January 24.
