The Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU) men's basketball team faced a narrow defeat against Bethel University in a Crossroads League game on January 10. The game, held in Mishawaka, Indiana, saw MVNU initially take a 5-0 lead with contributions from Peyton Heiss and Devin Dreier. However, Bethel managed to tie the game with a 7-0 run and led 49-44 at halftime.

In the second half, Bethel extended their lead to 62-47 early on and later to 82-64. Despite this, MVNU fought back and reduced the deficit to one point after a three-pointer by Trent Koning with just 36 seconds left. Bethel missed crucial free throws in the final moments, giving MVNU an opportunity to win. Unfortunately for MVNU, they missed the potential winning shot as time expired, resulting in an 89-88 loss.

Koning led all scorers with a career-high of 30 points. Isaiah Brown added 21 points and eight rebounds, while Heiss contributed 15 points. Dreier also made significant contributions with 11 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.

Coach Ronai expressed pride in his team's performance despite the loss: "Incredibly proud of this group. Their unbreakable spirit value shined through and even though we didn’t leave with a win, we left hungry to get better next week."

MVNU will next play against Goshen College at Ariel Arena on January 14 at 7:00 p.m.
