The Mt. Vernon Yellowjackets faced the Newark Wildcats in a non-conference boys basketball game, ultimately losing 73–34 to one of Ohio's unbeaten teams.

The game was held at Newark High School on January 3. According to reports, Newark's relentless pressure and efficient scoring established an early lead that Mt. Vernon could not overcome. The Wildcats, ranked second in the state, entered the contest with a perfect 9–0 record and utilized their depth and discipline to maintain their advantage throughout all four quarters.

Mt. Vernon demonstrated moments of determination, particularly on defense during the opening quarter, but struggled to match Newark’s balanced attack. Despite the lopsided score, the Yellowjackets competed until the final buzzer and exhibited effort that may benefit them as the season continues. The size and execution advantage of Newark was apparent; however, Mt. Vernon gained valuable experience against one of the state's top programs.

The next matchup for Mount Vernon is scheduled for January 10 when they will travel to Granville High School to face Granville.
