Mount Vernon Nazarene University's men's basketball team secured a conference victory against Marian University at Ariel Arena in Mount Vernon, Ohio. The Cougars, now 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference, faced off against the Knights of Marian University, who are 2-9 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
The game began with Marian taking an early lead, but MVNU quickly tied the score at 10 within five minutes. Both teams exchanged points until MVNU pulled ahead with an eight-point lead as the first half neared its end. A final basket by Isiah Brown gave MVNU a 30–23 advantage at halftime. Peyton Heiss was instrumental in the first half, scoring 15 points for the Cougars.
In the second half, MVNU extended their lead to 37–25 within three minutes. Abib Abib contributed significantly by hitting a three-pointer that increased their lead further and later pushed it to a 21-point advantage with another shot from beyond the arc. The Cougars maintained control throughout, finishing with a decisive 78–63 win.
MVNU outperformed Marian on rebounds with a slight edge of 32–31 and capitalized on turnovers by scoring 11 points from Marian's 12 errors. The Cougars shot efficiently at 51.9% from the field and made nine out of twenty attempts from three-point range. Heiss ended with a career-high performance of 27 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
Coach Ronai praised his team's defensive efforts: "I thought we were really good defensively the majority of the night. We are taking big steps on that end of the floor." Looking ahead, he noted that it is "time to finish well in the classroom with finals next week."
Next up for MVNU is a non-conference game against Campbellsville University in Kentucky on December 13.
