Mount Vernon Nazarene edges out Spring Arbor in tight basketball contest

The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's basketball team secured a narrow victory over Spring Arbor University in a home game at Ariel Arena on December 3. The match ended with a final score of 84-82, marking MVNU's eighth win of the season.

In the first half, Isaiah Brown tied the game at 17-17 with a layup. Although Spring Arbor briefly took the lead with Shane Rykse's three-pointer, Trent Koning quickly responded for MVNU, pushing them ahead to 34-33. By halftime, MVNU had extended their lead to 40-33, with Koning contributing significantly by scoring 16 points.

MVNU maintained their momentum in the second half, achieving their largest lead of 17 points after Grant Burkholder's free throw. However, Spring Arbor fought back to tie the game at 72-72 following two free throws from Travis Grayson. With just over a minute remaining, Brown's layup gave MVNU a slight edge at 79-76. Despite SAU's efforts to close the gap, Brown secured the win for MVNU by sinking two crucial free throws in the final seconds.

Brown led his team with 25 points and contributed five rebounds and two assists. Koning added another 23 points along with four rebounds and two assists. Peyton Heiss also played a vital role with 11 points and ten rebounds. Overall, MVNU shot 51.6% from the field and achieved an impressive free throw percentage of 81.3%. They also recorded seven turnovers leading to ten points.

Looking ahead, Mount Vernon Nazarene University will host Marian University at Ariel Arena on December 6 at 3:00 p.m.
