Members of the Mt. Vernon FFA Chapter participated in the annual Timber Cruise Competition on September 4, 2025. The event took place at the property of Garrett and Linda Swendal and included students from FFA teams throughout the county. Participants were tested on their ability to identify tree species by both leaf and bark, as well as estimate marketable timber volume and value.
Mt. Vernon’s team, represented by Zeva Sheets, Ryan Fletcher, and Koby McClain, finished third overall in the competition. Zeva Sheets also placed second individually.
“We’re proud of how hard our students have worked to develop their forestry knowledge and skills,” said Stephanie Plumly, Mt. Vernon FFA Advisor. “Their dedication is paying off, and we’re excited to see what they’ll do at the next level.”
The team is set to compete next at the District 7 FFA Forestry Contest on September 9.
