Mount Vernon High School (MVHS) launches Winter Food Drive to fight hunger.
Aiming to help its students and their families, the school is targeting to collect 25,000 food items to 'support families during these uncertain times,' according to MVHS. Donations will be received at the main office.
"The goal is ambitious — collecting 25,000 food items — but we know our incredible students, staff, and community can make it happen!" the school stated.
Anyone aware of a family in need of support through Mount Vernon High School’s food drive is encouraged to contact Mr. Caughlan at ccaughlan@mvcsd.us. All referrals will be treated with strict confidentiality. Students seeking assistance may also reach out to their guidance counselor, an administrator, or Mrs. Luckey, the school’s social worker, at nluckey@mvcsd.us. The school remains committed to ensuring that every student and family has access to essential resources and support.
The food drive welcomes a wide range of non-perishable goods. High-priority items include canned goods such as meats, vegetables, and fruits—preferably packed in juice rather than syrup—as well as canned or boxed soups. Staple carbohydrates like rice, pasta, noodles, cereals, and crackers are also in demand. In addition, the drive encourages donations of easy, ready-to-eat meals, including instant ramen and shelf-stable meal kits.
Beyond food, the school is also collecting essential toiletries and household items such as toilet paper, diapers, and other general family care products.
The school has reported that more than 3,000 items have been donated, and some of them have already been given to those in need.
"After one week, we were able to collect close to 3,100 items," the newsletter reads. "Hundreds of items have already been distributed to our families."
The Winter Food Drive underscores the importance of every single donation and encourages the school community to unite in support of MVHS families.
"Let’s come together to ensure every MVHS family has what they need this winter. Every item counts — thank you for your generosity!
Any remaining donations from the drive will be given to the local food pantry to extend support to more members of the community.
