Mount Vernon faced a challenging start to its season opener on Friday night, ultimately succumbing to Marion Harding with a 21-14 loss. The game was marked by Mount Vernon's control over much of the play but marred by costly penalties.

According to the team's performance, quarterback Mason Richards led the Fighting Jackets’ offense with a notable contribution, rushing for 91 yards and scoring both touchdowns. He also completed 14 of 27 passes for 149 yards, maintaining pressure on Harding’s secondary throughout the game.

The statistics reflect Mount Vernon's dominance in possession, finishing with 155 rushing yards on 40 carries and earning 16 first downs compared to Harding’s nine. The team executed 69 plays against Harding’s 40, leveraging its offensive line to sustain long drives and convert critical fourth downs.

However, momentum shifted as Mount Vernon was penalized 14 times for a total of 117 yards, which often negated significant gains and stalled their drives. Marion Harding capitalized on these opportunities, scoring the decisive touchdown late in the game and thwarting Mount Vernon's final rally attempts.

Despite the setback, Mount Vernon found encouragement in its balanced attack and defensive effort. "Coaches said the performance showed the team can compete in difficult matchups if it cuts down on mistakes."

Mount Vernon (0-1) is set to travel to Newark next Friday as they seek their first win of the season.
