At its July meeting, the Mount Vernon City Schools Board of Education decided to waive general school fees for all students for the 2025-26 academic year. The district will also continue offering free breakfast and lunch to every student, regardless of income.
These actions are intended to help families manage costs related to education and ensure that all students have access to necessary resources. The board stated that these steps are part of a broader effort to reduce financial pressures on parents and promote equal educational opportunities.
“We understand that the cost of school supplies, meals, and other essentials can add up quickly for families,” said Board President Jody Goetzman. “By waiving school fees and continuing to offer free meals, we hope to provide meaningful support and help keep costs down for parents in our community.”
A change this year is that families will not need to submit applications for free or reduced-price lunches. All students enrolled in Mount Vernon City Schools will automatically receive both breakfast and lunch at no charge. This aims to simplify the process for parents.
The waived fees cover items such as classroom supplies and course materials. Parents with questions about these supports are encouraged to contact their building principal or secretary.
The board’s decision reflects an emphasis on supporting both academic achievement and family involvement. More information about back-to-school updates can be found at www.mvcsd.us.
