East Elementary School, originally called First Ward School, was founded in 1851 as a two-story structure with a wooden fence and separate privies for boys and girls. In 1881, the school relocated to its current site and underwent extensive renovations, reopening in 1908 with eight classrooms for grades 1 through 8. A major fire in 1909 nearly destroyed the building, but it was rebuilt and reopened the following year. In 1952, five classrooms and a multipurpose room were added, forming the foundation of the school today, which now serves around 250 students in grades K–5.
