A six-run seventh inning propelled Mount Vernon to a come-from-behind 12-6 victory over Northridge on Wednesday in non-league baseball action.
Trailing 6-4 heading into the final inning, the Yellow Jackets erupted for five hits and capitalized on Northridge mistakes to seal the win. Kayden Packard delivered the key blow with a bases-loaded single that drove in three runs, finishing with a team-high three RBIs on the day.
Mount Vernon (record not listed) opened the scoring in the top of the first on a Packard groundout but quickly fell behind 4-1 after Northridge responded with a string of RBI singles in the bottom half. Two more runs came across for the Vikings in the third, aided by a Mount Vernon error.
The Yellow Jackets chipped away in the sixth. Carter Castlemen drove in a run with a groundout, and Aric Lust added a sacrifice fly to even the score at 6-6.
In total, Mount Vernon racked up 12 hits and drew six walks. Castlemen, Zac Clow, and Nolan Hershberger each tallied two hits. Ezra Kurek reached base twice via walk, while the team also turned a double play defensively.
Caden Theibert earned the win in relief, tossing three shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three. Starter Cam Firebaugh pitched four innings, surrendering six unearned runs on six hits and striking out four.
Northridge was led offensively by Riley Reeves, Kash Reeves, and Collin Matheson, who each collected two hits. Will Higgins drove in two runs from the eighth spot in the order.
Mount Vernon is scheduled to travel to Watkins Memorial on Friday for its next contest.
