Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU) is set to host a spring instrumental ensembles concert on March 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Auditorium. The event, open to the public and free of charge, will feature performances by the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Flute Choir, and String Ensemble.
The Symphonic Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. John Packard, will perform music from popular video games such as “World of Warcraft,” “Final Fantasy VII,” “Myst III,” and “Tetris.” Additionally, they will present two pieces by Grammy-winning composer Christopher Tin from the “Civilization” series. "Sogno Di Volare," inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s writings on flight, and "Baba Yetu," based on a Swahili translation of the Lord’s Prayer, will be featured with "Baba Yetu" closing the concert.
The MVNU Jazz Band will showcase three contrasting pieces highlighting the band's talent. They will begin with “Wave,” featuring Seth Righter on baritone saxophone, followed by David Springfield’s ballad “Ever After,” and conclude with Craig Skeffington's swing chart “Reverse of the Curse.” While Mr. Chuck Dettmar usually directs the band, Dr. Trevor Marcho will take over for this performance.
Performances by the Flute Choir and String Ensemble are also scheduled. The Flute Choir includes MVNU students and community members under Mrs. Jennifer Packard's direction. Dr. Juan Carlos Ortega directs the String Ensemble.
