Devin Spring, a sophomore at Utica High School, concluded a notable high school bowling season on Friday at the Division 2 (D2) Districts tournament held at HP Lanes. He narrowly missed individual qualification for the D2 State Tournament by just three pins.
According to reports, Spring finished with a 639 series across three games, placing him close behind Fredericktown’s Jordan Moore, who scored a 642 series and secured the final individual qualifying spot. Despite this near miss, Spring's performance highlighted his emergence as one of the region’s top young bowlers.
Spring earned the Licking County League (LCL) Boys Bowler of the Year honor this season, boasting a season-long average of 202. His consistency and skill were further highlighted by his selection to the First Team LCL Boys team, recognizing him as one of the league’s elite players.
Among his other achievements, Spring claimed the award for the highest series of 506 in a two-game match against Northridge, where he posted scores of 268 and 238. These performances showcased his ability to deliver under pressure and solidified his reputation as a formidable competitor in the sport.
"Devin has been a key part of our team this year," said Utica High School bowling coach Joe Beaubien. "His dedication and natural talent have elevated our program, and we’re proud of his accomplishments both individually and as a team member."
Spring’s journey to the districts began with strong showings throughout the regular season. His high averages and clutch performances in critical matches set him apart. His 202 season average reflects a level of consistency rare for a sophomore, positioning him as a rising star in Ohio’s high school bowling scene.
The D2 Districts tournament, held at HP Lanes in Columbus, drew competitors from across the region. Spring’s 639 series demonstrated his ability to compete at the highest level. Although he fell short of advancing individually, his score was a testament to his growth and potential for future seasons.
