The Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU) Board of Trustees has announced a plan to improve communication and foster reconciliation on campus. This decision follows recent events that have drawn significant attention, including a no-confidence vote by some faculty members.

Michael T. Nietzel, author of an article in Forbes Magazine about the situation, noted, “While the reasons for no-confidence votes vary from institution to institution, one of the most common scenarios is faculty displeasure with large-scale academic restructuring and budget reductions directed by presidents and chancellors.” MVNU is reportedly facing similar challenges.

Some faculty members expressed regret over their participation in the no-confidence vote, citing a lack of comprehensive information prior to voting. The results were released publicly without following the university's official communication process.

The MVNU Board acknowledges the importance of maintaining respect among leadership, faculty, and staff within a strong academic environment. They emphasized adherence to high legal and ethical standards while encouraging open dialogue guided by Christian values.

During their November 2024 meeting, the Board reviewed financial forecasts indicating that while improvements had been made, the budget remained unbalanced. As part of efforts to align more closely with Church of Nazarene principles and achieve financial stability within two to three years, President Dr. Carson Castleman was tasked with implementing necessary changes.

An investigation into complaints against Dr. Castleman found them unsubstantiated but highlighted issues of perception which were addressed with him directly.

Recognizing a communication gap between administration and other stakeholders such as local churches, students, and alumni groups; this week saw steps taken towards bridging these divides through establishing a task force dedicated specifically towards fostering healthier communications across all parties involved at MVNU.

In support for better communication initiatives on campus last Friday during an all-campus meeting where President Castleman expressed his commitment toward reconciliation efforts: "Our hope is that regardless if we see eye-to-eye or not - unity will prevail."

Additionally this week came news from trustees who unanimously reaffirmed confidence in Dr.Castleman's leadership moving forward into future endeavors aimed at achieving fiscal stability alongside academic excellence provided through high-quality Christian education opportunities available now & beyond years ahead since founding back '68 till present day amidst ongoing organizational changes underway throughout university life today
